  • Construction Updates for January 18, 2023

    David Veseth, PCN Construction Reporter|Jan 18, 2023

One day, in October, before Halloween, I got to watch the City of Malta tear down a pink house across the street from the Phillips County News in Malta. Besides that, when I was there I could even watch the machine and steam shovel tearing the building down. Now the lot is empty and we all wonder what will be put there. They took the old house down because it was falling apart. For Christmas, I went down to Billings and went to a Christmas Day Service on Sunday, December 25....

1 yrs ago Jan. 9, 2013 In her golden years Sylvia Ohs was bursting with excitement at the celebration of her 100th birthday. Sixty-one immediate members of her family gathered at the Malta Community Church to celebrate with her. Her one concession to her turning 100 is having to give up her driver’s license; which she did – reluctantly, to placate her daughter, Karen Wiederrick. Close to a spanking The Malta M-ettes remain undefeated after puttin’ a whoopin’ on the Lady Panthers Friday night, 62-18. The team was led by Jayla Graham and Brenna...

  • Senior Center: Ah, the Memories of Biscuits and Sausage Gravy

    Sharon Kindle, Malta Senior Center|Jan 18, 2023

The Malta Senior Center will be serving up biscuits with sausage gravy guaranteed to fill you up on Saturday, January 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a free will offering which will go toward the awning to be constructed over the new front door. I can still see the kids’ paternal gramma stirring the gravy in a humongous cast iron fry pan with the trash burner providing the heat. The fluffy biscuits (no Bisquick used in that house!) were piling up on a platter which would disappear like magic once the gravy hit the table. Many times t...

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Jan 11, 2023

Missed holidays and missed birthdays of family and friends. Those are just two of the reasons former Phillips County Undersheriff Kevin Metcalf has entered retirement. Besides that, 24 years of being a target behind a gold star that won't stop a bullet, merits a day or two of time off to do the things in life that the job has kept him from doing. Kevin signed off on his radio at 4:56 p.m. on Dec. 21, 2022, with a bit of emotion in his voice. When you truly enjoy what you're doing, it is more tha...

    Compiled by Kari Hould|Jan 11, 2023

1 yrs ago Jan. 2, 2013 A long way to come for a birthday! Noble Meisdalen had written an article sharing how the Meisdalen name came to the area. This was shared after his cousin Knute, wife Jone, and son Joselin had arrived from Norway. They had used a GPS and drove right up to his home at 226 Pearl Drive, just in time to celebrate Noble’s 91st birthday. Under watchful eyes Donald Bradley Lynn was sanctioned by the Montana Board of Outfitters, after being found guilty of illegally guiding hunters on the Ft. Belknap Reservation. He was f...

    Shyla Sunford, Saco Public School|Jan 11, 2023

It has been a couple of busy weeks for our little community. Basketball games, bingo nights, music concerts, the list keeps going. I want to give proper recognition to the kids that are breaking books out of "book jail" and volunteering their time outside of the classroom. These last two weeks Saco's Pep Club hosted bingo on two separate occasions, but the 13th was especially fun. The attendees were able to win homemade goodies made from kids of the student body if they won the bingo game. We...

She shipped a live tree to his unit, the 484th Military Police Company, a National Guard unit – in Afghanistan. For many stationed there (well…most) it was the first live tree anyone had seen in a war zone. Before “Box Day” June Cornell and Carol Schumacher were kept busy assembling 75-100 Christmas boxes at the local Food Bank. Sharon Kindle, Patriotic Chair, VFW Post 4067|Jan 4, 2023

This is a trifle late for New Year’s, but jot it down, especially for the 4th of July. When lighting fireworks, or shooting off guns, keep in mind those among us suffering from PTSD. What is fun for some can be terror and heartbreaking to others. A quote from Pharr, Texas “The sounds of fireworks, or can resemble gunshots, and that can add to the stress of veterans suffering from PTSD.” “The simple thing of just the smell of gunpowder can trigger something. It doesn’t have to be the noise”, Marine veteran Alfredo Oritz said. It’s typical to ce...
