The "true meaning" of Christmas was on full display at the Malta Assembly of God Church on Sunday night as the church hosted their 2014 Christmas Program with a presentation of The Secret of Snowflake County in which 32 children took to the stage and delighted the crowd for 45 minutes. The Secret of Snowflake County tells the story of a place where Christmas celebrations have become so extravagant that they start to overshadow the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Jesus. A series of...

At the Tuesday night City Council meeting in Malta, Board Members once again heard from a city resident who had her sewer back up into her home’s basement. “We had number five last Sunday night,” she said. Public Works Director James Brown said that the crew will continue to flush the sewers and that this week Phil Henderson was going to assist the Works Team by running a video camera down the portion of the sewer line that continues to ba...
The Malta School Board last Wednesday approved the purchase of a new score board for the Middle School and also approved a three-year contract extension to Malta School’s Superintendent Kris Kuehn. The entire system currently in place at the Malta Middle School gym is becoming erratic – at times, the buzzer sounds at inopportune times -- and the Malta Athletic Club will be picking up a large portion of the bill. The controllers for the new score board will be the same as the ones currently used in the high school. Following a closed ses...

The federal game warden who patrols the national wildlife refuge where I hunt told me last year that 96 percent of the hunters there are doing something illegal. I thought at the time that was an outrageous assumption coming from a law enforcement officer. Earlier this week he wrote my friend -- I’ll call him Da’Quan --a $125 ticket for being in possession of toxic shot. Da’Quan had a low-base trap shell in the pocket of his hunting vest when checked by the warden. It obviously wasn’t a pheasant...
I have been an Oakland Raiders fan for as long as I have been watching the NFL. Back in the early 70’s, my father was stationed at Mare Island Navel Base in Vallejo, California, a 35-minute drive from the Oakland Coliseum, home of Charlie Finley’s Athletics and Al Davis’ Raiders. My father was around 18-years-old at the time, a fresh-faced sailor from Butte, Montana, making his first stop in a military career that would end up spanning over 30 years. I’m not sure if my father was a Raiders’ fan before moving to Northern Cali, but he quickly b...

The Phillips County Museum is open Monday through Saturday through the month of December. Come in and visit us! Ted and Norma Kelly stepped through our doors last week with a great bunch of old pictures. One is a picture of what we know today as the “Community Church” though in the picture it has an old I.O.O.F. 1818 sign on the top of the building. Can anyone tell us when it first began to be known as the I.O.O.F. building? Was it built for that purpose? The Enterprise paper, July 15, 1908, had an ad saying “the IOOF meeting would be held...

1 years ago December 17, 1914 Malta Locals: The Scarlet Fever scare that was prevalent the first of the week has died out considerably and no new cases have developed. The closing of the different buildings in the city might have helped some in stamping out the disease but when children are allowed on the streets to the extent that are in Malta, they had better be in school. Dr. Cockrell was up the latter part of last week and closed the schools and public places for a short time. The schools have been thoroughly fumigated. The picture...
The Malta M-ettes are playing just as fast and furious as they were last season, which may be scary for any team they face. The M-ettes are 2-0 after kicking off their regular season against Class A's Havre Blue Ponies and Fergus Lady Eagles. Senior M-ette Markelle Lettis no stranger to facing Fergus and Havre. Though facing teams in a class higher than you can be intimidating, Lett seemed confident. "Not really because I know that we are good and we're going to do great things," she said when...
