  • Considerations for ag producers as drought persists

    Marko Manoukian, P. C. Extension Agent|Dec 8, 2021

As the dry November closes here are some considerations for agricultural producers. Dormant dryland seeding of perennial grass and forbs should not be planted with our current conditions. While the plants will not germinate (that is a good thing), Montana State University recommendation are for 18 inches of soil moisture for dryland seeding of perennials. With no soil moisture, producers would be better to wait and see if conditions improve in the spring of 2022 for a dryland perennial seeding....

Sympathy to family who lost children in the school shootings. So sad. Thanksgiving Day was wonderful! My granddaughter Challise and her husband Tim Hoff came from Bozeman. We had a delicious dinner, with turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, and pies. Others joined us for visits. Then Friday we went to Sleeping Buffalo, which was full, including babies and people of all ages. A nice weekend. Now Christmas season has officially begun. I love the music of Christmas! Here are the coming Christmas...

If we get clear skies in the evenings you will be able to see Venus close to the horizon in the west, then a golden planet Saturn and even farther up in the sky a bright Jupiter! And as the week goes the moon moves along the row of planets, kind of highlighting each one for three nights. The planets will be visible for a few weeks this month! I participated in the vendor fair on Saturday at the Phillips County Museum. I saw many friends, old and new. I enjoyed everything about it. And was able...

  • Response to Missing Person Case from 1981

    Dec 8, 2021

Dear Editor and Readers, The November 3, 2021 newspaper had a letter to the editor about the 1981 disappearance of Barbara Louise Cotton. The article was interesting as Barbara was a 15 year old from Williston, North Dakota. As a parent, not knowing what happened to your child would be the worst heartbreak. My son Scott told me about a podcast he had been listening to concerning a missing girl from North Dakota. The podcast had several references to Malta and was indeed about Barbara Louise Cotton. If you are interested in learning more about...

  • I'm sure we will have a white Christmas

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Dec 8, 2021

It snowed yesterday. Not a big dump. Only four or five inches. But it’s going nowhere. There’s a very good chance this snow will still be on the ground come March, and very little chance it will melt before then. We don’t typically get a lot of snow up here, but what falls this late stays. Malta is just far enough north to miss the chinook winds that bring relief to much of the rest of the state. Months pass in the dark of winter here without the mercury ever rising above freezing. We tell...
