If you are looking for Ned Mangis, there are only a couple of places you need look. If it is Sunday, chances are you will find the 92-year-old at church. Any other day of the week, chances are good that you will find him at work at B and B in Malta. "Some days I have ten or twelve customers and some days I don't have any and it is quite around here," Ned said. "It's been a good business and I get the chance to be around people. I enjoy coming down here and going to work every morning,...
The Malta Public Works crew thought they might have had a lead on the “phantom smell” that has plagued downtown Malta for some time, but after a little asking around, the smell remains a mystery. At the Tuesday meeting a week ago, Public Works crewmember Jim Truelove said that he recently talked to a member of Montana DEQ who said he had seen a similar problem in his neck of the woods and the cause was natural gas. Truelove and Mayor Jones met with Tony Boos of Montana-Dakota Utilities a few days after the meeting, according to Mayor Jon...
Folks packed into the old gym at Whitewater School last Thursday for the school's annual Carnival held each year for a way for classes and the booster club to raise monies for such occasions as the Eighth Grade Graduation Tea – hosted by the seventh grade-- and to build up coffers for high school graduation. "The different classes set up different activities for the night," said Mariam Sanguins, Music teacher at Whitewater School. "They are mostly little carnival games people can play and win p...
Jason DeShaw visited with students at Malta High School on Wednesday afternoon as part 16-stop, 21-day tour across Montana preforming Serenity in the Storm, which combines his story of struggling with mental illness with songs of hope. Presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana and the Center for Mental Health Research and Recovery at Montana State University in Bozeman, Deshaw's Serenity in the Storm tour opened on April 14 in Butte and since then has made stops in many Montana towns in...
I swore I’d never stop. Horn hunting was the coolest thing I’d ever done to make money. I was young and strong and could walk all day. Elk antlers were worth $7 a pound, the country spectacular, and the grizzly bears -- fresh out of hibernation -- added an edge that I relished. After a winter in Cooke City spent scraping by on whatever work was available, spring offered an opportunity to finally make a few bucks. While snow still lay deep in the mountains, the foothills began baring off in Apr...
Dear Editor This is an open letter to those who like to use the Saco shooting range that is operated by the Saco Shootist Society. This is a private shooting range that is operated on private land, owned by, and through the courtesy of 1st Creek Ranch in Saco. Only once were we forced to lock it up due to misuse and vandalism. It is our job as members to keep the property cleaned up, and the gates in good shape and closed. I was just out this morning and had to repair the bob wire fence that was shot into in 2 places, and clean up the broken...
Last week I got on my soapbox and called names...pretty childish. I got a call from a concerned reader that I had muddied the name of the Phillips County News. This reader was offended about the language I used and that I attacked another person. She said that my opinion about Ann Coulter showed my political leanings and my language was middle-school at best. Looking back, I have to agree. I would like to apologize to anyone I offended with last week's column. I tried to make an argument that a person who would disfranchise a group of American...
Dear Editor, Citizens of Phillips County and Montana, I am asking for your help in a matter of great personal concern to me. Montana Developmental Center in Boulder, MT., is on the verge of closing. SB411 passed in the Senate and House. There are only a few more steps until it reaches the Governor’s office for him to sign or veto it. If MDC closes, a lot of the clients would be lost in the shuffle with very little or no help at all as some of them have tried and failed to find the help they need. So we would end up with even more homeless p...
Dear Editor, I read your last column headline and thought it was a joke. I can't relate to your nasty name calling to make your point. You mention you usually stay away from political commentary. I can sure see why you should. Several points you try to make do emphasize your inexpert world view on these issues. Coulter makes a valid observation here. I try to understand the viewpoints of local and national political commentators from all sides of the debates. I can't always agree with her interesting viewpoints. But we all seem to concur on...
Dear Editor, As a former resident of Malta, it was with interest I read the letter to the editor in last week’s Phillips County News concerning the suggested sale of the Phillips County Hospital and Family Health Clinic and Hi-Line Retirement Center. As a resident of Choteau, I have watched with interest the sale of our hospital. There are three sides to every story – your side, my side and the truth. I wanted to clarify some of the statements quoted in the letter from the Great Falls Tribune with the facts: •No layoffs or change in services -...

Wow! What a huge difference in weather around here. I guess my dad was right when he said “If you don’t like the weather in Montana, wait around 15 minutes, it’ll change!” Debbie Richau and grandson Ayden made the trip up from Billings to visit with Barbara Cowan and Tom and Dixie Stordahl. They took Barbara to Havre on Friday to see the eye doctor for a check up. Dixie Stordahl attended the spring meeting of the Montana Dinosaur Trail in Malta on Saturday. Several people got together after t...

My sympathy to the beautiful little calves who are – or will soon be – branded and operated on. Always sympathy to darling lambs who are docked (tails cut off) and other things. Congratulations to the Phillips County News on the colored pictures and photos in the paper! My apologies for the incorrect names and or information in the recent papers. Congratulations to the winners of the Alpha Zeta Chapter contest. Jim Murdock Jr. traveled to Scotland to visit relatives and sightsee. I hope you had...
Everall Holman has the distinction of quite possibly being the only person who has been to all 99 Phillips County Fairs. "I was just a baby at the first one," Everall said. "I don't remember anything from that day, but I know my parents drove us kids there in a Model T." Though he doesn't remember that first Phillips County Fair in 1916, he does know that he has eaten at least one cheeseburger from the 4-H Booth for at least 90 years and he said he has plans to have another burger at fair...

I listen at meetings in our community of Phillips County and I read the statistics about who we are and what we do as a community and as families. According to those statistics, given to us by the U S Cen-sus bureau, Phillips County performs 35% over the national median for being members of charitable organizations. In other words, we ROCK as far as volunteerism is concerned! What is volunteerism? There are many discussions around the world about volunteerism and the needs of nonprofit organizations. Do you know what the needs are at the...
The Great Plains Dinosaur Museum is pleased to announce that Dr. Liz Freedman Fowler will be joining their staff this summer.
