The Malta Lutheran Church hosted a free Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving in Malta last Thursday, accommodating 90 guests with turkey, potatoes and all the other goodies associated with the day. Ahead of the Thanksgiving celebration, volunteers met at Malta Lutheran Church on Wednesday night to peel some 100 pounds of potatoes as well as cook approximately 200-pounds of turkey (eight turkeys weighing anywhere from 16-to-25 pounds), 26 pumpkin pies, and serving gallons of black olives, real whip...

  • Skiff's Prairie DeSigns replaces former Sew Sassy

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Nov 28, 2018

To know Malta's Katie Skiff at all is to know that she is the crafty sort, so it should come as no surprise that she and her husband Greg's recent purchase of the former Sew Sassy - cleverly renamed Prairie DeSigns - was a bit of a no-brainer when the opportunity for ownership arose. "I actually had a personal, smaller vinyl cutting machine, so I would make my own t-shirts," Katie said. "So, when this opportunity came, I was like 'Yes! This is what I want to do'. And then Greg just goes along...

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Nov 28, 2018

From a brand-new building at a brand-new location, to a new building on a current site, and a remodel of a historic building, there is no shortage of construction taking place in Malta these days. Lloyd's Auto is having a new shop built on the corner of Central Ave. and S. 2nd St. East near Malta City Hall; Ezzie's Wholesale's new building is going up east of the current building, and Barb and Parker Heinlein's building on Malta's Central Avenue - originally the Bell Telephone Building - is in...

  • A Wonderful Fall

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Nov 28, 2018

I hunted the first 15 days of the season before I took a break, but couldn’t relax on my first day off because I felt like I was missing something. Now, at the end of November, I still feel the same way, like I’m missing something if I take a day off. It all goes by so quickly. Big game season ends this weekend. Antelope is already over. Same with sage grouse. Upland bird runs through the first of the year, and I’ll go out at every opportunity, but it, too, will be over before you know it. I...

  • Bummers

    Nov 28, 2018

Last week I talked about the things I enjoyed about our vacation to Lake Tahoe and this week I wanted to talk about the things that bummed me out about our trip. I have a problem with simply enjoying vacations. During my 22nd birthday, while I was living in Florida, my mother came down and surprised me with a vacation cruise to the Bahamas. That story is for another day, but it was on that trip that I realized that I don’t relax well. I was hoping that this trip to Lake Tahoe would be different. I did have relaxing times, but I found a way t...

  • Hide your pens when I'm around

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Nov 28, 2018

I don’t intend to have sticky fingers…I really don’t. Yesterday, I visited the lovely ladies at the Phillips County Treasurer’s office to pay my taxes. We chatted for a few seconds and off I went (one of the beautiful things about living in a small community is the lack of standing in lines for such events.) Out of their office, down the elevator, and out into the parking lot I went. I dug into the front pocket of my jacket to fish out my car keys and there, already in my hand, a pen I had inadvertently stolen from their office. The Pen Thief h...
