Patty Simons, owner of Patty’s Floral and Greenhouse, saw what a group of people were doing in Big Sandy, Mont., and decided it would be a good fit for Phillips County. The idea was to have students at local schools paint or draw pictures of iconic locations throughout the county, pick some winners and award some prizes. Simons got together with Kathy Bagley at Malta’s Art Spot to hammer out the details and a short time later, when the contest had run its course, nearly 50 entries were sub...
The 24th Annual Phillips County Healthcare Foundation Dinner and Auction was held last Saturday in Malta's City Hall building. While the event was shorter in duration this year, the event was filled with plenty of suspense. It was the first time that local Valley Drug owner and Phillips County Healthcare Foundation Board chairman Greg Ziegler, hosted the event. "Honestly I was nervous going into it and it went way better than I could've ever hoped for," Ziegler told the PCN. "A big thanks to...

Chris Kinkelaar is the new manager of Horizon Resources on Highway 2, but she isn't new to Malta. "I am originally from Winifred (Mont.) but lived here in Malta after I got married," Kinkelaar said. Welcome to the world, Danilo. It’s much bigger than the hospital where you were born, and even bigger than Atlanta where you’ll live with your mother and father. Parts of it are scary, but most of it is wonderful. See as much of it as you can. There’s little doubt you’ll get to know Montana, my corner of the world. You have a passel of relatives out here. It’s where your mother was born and raised. She left to see the world, met your father, and found a home in the South. We’re still waiti...

Dear Editor, The lost art of defrosting your windshield before driving in the winter time I grew up and have spent most of my life living in the north country. It has always been a common practice to start your vehicle 20 minutes before you leave the house so that you can see out your windshield while driving 4,000 lbs. of steel down the road that you are sharing with other drivers and pedestrians of all ages. It also helps quite a bit to avoid those other obstacles such as trees, power poles and road signs. It makes it a lot easier to see the...
I met a kid from Sweden and I acquired the knowledge that hedgehogs run wild in his hometown. It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of my plans to move overseas and live with the hedgehogs. Gatsby and I are a fierce duo, it’s common knowledge that our favorite things include drinking beer, meeting women, and spending cold evenings watching reruns of Parks and Recreation. Could you imagine the type of guy I’d be if I could go hoard hedgehogs in Sweden? On second thought, I think I’ll stay in Bozeman, for the sake of my sanity. With all t...
Life throws you a curveball sometimes and all you can do is either take a swing or leave it alone with hope that the umpire makes a call in your favor. I had a curve ball the other day, a furry, disease carrying type. My wife Susan knew something was up when the peanut butter on our set up mouse trap was licked clean. (Don’t worry it’s the plastic type and would only scare PJ if he tripped it.) There was no possible way PJ could lick the peanut butter off without it snapping and Bruce isn...

Saco's Howard Pippin found the above message scrawled across a piece of wood from the old grain elevator that was knocked down two weeks ago. The message reads " Galvin Lunde, Vienna S. Dak., Jan 14 1951, 4-1-51." Lunde was the construction boss on the building meaning it was built in 1951 and not the 1940's as previously reported. Another point of clarification is GB Excavating out of Saco, owned by Greg Broadbrooks, were the ones to take down the three elevators in Saco and he is the one in...
