  • Letter to the Editor for Wednesday, November 10, 2021

    Nov 10, 2021

Dear Editor, It was the second week of March 2020, Sonia and I were in Janesville, Wisconsin attending a seminar on raising game birds. Something I thought would be fun to do in retirement. At the conference there were participants from all over the United States, Canada, France, England, Scotland, Ukraine, Belgium, and other European counties. We all piled on crowed tour buses, went out for meals in crowed restaurants. No mask, no thoughts or worries of COVID, life was good. By Friday afternoon, there were rumors of toilet paper shortages,...

  • Childhood memory of a farm in Illinois

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Nov 10, 2021

My father certainly didn’t hunt as much as I do, but from the time I was 9 or 10 years old he always made sure to include me when he did go hunting. One trip we took every fall was to his cousin’s farm in Illinois where we’d stay in an old camp trailer out back behind the barn. Dad would pick me up early from school on a Friday, and I’d settle into the backseat with our beagle Patches while he and Mom’s cousin Carlton, who was like an uncle to me, sat up front telling stories and smoking c...

The 2021 school year started with a bang, as students studied the Roaring 20s and read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. After completing the novel, the students each selected an icon from the 20s, researched that person, and then put together a presentation where they portrayed that character. The final component of the project involved presenting (as their characters) to grades 4-8 and staff in a birthday celebration for Fitzgerald, who turned 125 on September 24th. For the grand...

  • Phillips County Museum News for Wednesday, November 10, 2021

    Lori Taylor, P. C. Museum Curator|Nov 10, 2021

An “Unsolved Murder / Disappearance” of Abe Gill was on our minds this week. This mystery involves some well-known Phillips County names such as the Coburn Ranch and Kid Curry. The story involves land disputes, water rights, and women! Background of the story varies with which author you read but here is my condensed version! It begins with Dan Tressler and his wife Lucy and six children. For what ever reason Lucy seems to have taken up with Johnny Curry and Dan decided to sell his holdings in the Little Rockies and move to Harlem with the chi...
