  • US Highway 191 Project Update

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Nov 1, 2023

Mother Nature roared her head and let this part of the country know that she still has an opinion...and it counts! Furthermore, it trumps plans made by many people. The huge excavators, bulldozers and scrapers are now sitting alongside the construction site as Wickens Construction decides whether to close up the project for the year or hold off and wait for the sun to come out tomorrow. Time will tell. As of now, the wheels are sitting, covered with snow, as were vehicles across the town for...

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Nov 1, 2023

Young members of the American Legion Auxiliary, the "Juniors", have been busy with projects this month. Since this month is "Agent Orange Awareness Month," much of their time and energies were directed to bring awareness to the public about Agent Orange. The group painted rocks of various sizes orange as the background and then added messages. Some were messages of hope, some were statistics, and some were ones that left the reader in thought. Perhaps you weren't affected by the toxic and...

Sommer Waters: "I don't think they should do a four-day school week, because they would go longer; and there would be no Boys & Girls Club." • Teamwork Between Man and Animal

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Nov 1, 2023

Bird hunting at its most basic level is a relatively simple endeavor. Dog flushes bird. Hunter shoots bird. Dog retrieves bird. When it all comes together it’s a beautiful thing to experience, a well-orchestrated bit of teamwork between man and animal. Seldom, however, does it all come off so simply. More often it’s a different scenario ending with dog flushes bird out of range. Or hunter misses easy shot. Or dog can’t believe hunter actually hit something and has no interest in finding dead...

    Rose Teske, P. C. Museum Curator|Nov 1, 2023

While researching a request for information about the Malta Enterprise Publishing Company I ran across some interesting history of early-day Malta newspapers. The first issue of the Malta version of The Enterprise was published on May 8, 1900. The paper had been started in Harlem the previous year by J. D. B. Grieg. The paper was moved to Malta because of “the increased amount of advertising offered by the businessmen of Malta”. According to some sources Mr. Grieg had also had some physical altercations with Harlem businessmen. On Jan. 1, 190...
