  • Broken water main causes headaches in Malta

    Mark Hebert, E|Oct 22, 2014

A crack in a cast iron main near the intersection of South 1st Ave East and South 7th Street East last Thursday evening caused a small river to flow down several blocks of 7th Street East and left some Malta City Residents to be without running water for much of Friday. The break in the main also left the Malta City Works team with a 13-hour workday on Friday as they had to rip up pavement, figure out where 70-plus year-old water shutoffs were and to dig an eight-foot trench to find the broken p...

  • Stuck in the muck

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Oct 22, 2014

It had been a while since I’d scared myself. I was hunting the marsh with Jem a couple of days before the pheasant opener. We were loaded for ducks, but the primary purpose of the trip was to scout for roosters. Jem, my black and white springer spaniel, is the only one of my dogs that will enthusiastically retrieve waterfowl. Spot’s reluctantly brought back a few ducks that she could reach while wading, and Ace will corral them on land. Jem, however, can even perform blind retrieves, if I dir...

  • Reader disgusted with former organization sponsor

    Oct 22, 2014

Dear Editor, IAM A VOLUNTEER. I can track the start of my volunteering career to my freshman year at Malta High School when I joined Key Club. Picking up trash along the highway and organizing events for students at the grade school are a couple of things that got me hooked. Cleaning up our community so we can be proud of it and visitors may enjoy the beauty of our little comer of this big world. Getting to know the youth in this area and letting them know there are people who care and like to have fun with them. After high school, I chose to...

  • Stahl was fair to all as Justice of the Peace

    Oct 22, 2014

Dear Editor, I received a letter from Gary Taylor soliciting my vote for J.P. in Phillips County. In this letter, he stated the respect for the office was back with him in office. I don’t think the respect was lost, as Judge Stahl held the office for 30 years thanks to the voters of Phillips County. As far as fine money went, I know she collected back fines as my son was one that got behind and she worked with him to catch it up. So I know she was definitely paying attention to the fines. As far as underage guilty parties, they were put to w...

  • Wonderful Wednesday whirlwind

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Oct 22, 2014

Watching the sunrise while at the office of the Phillips County News on any given day is wonderful, but Wednesdays are particularly so. Shades of pink, red and orange mix with black, gray and blue until finally the mornings sky comes fully awake and day has arrived. I don’t sit in front of the office and watch the entire display unfurl, but rather catch it in bits and pieces as I venture outside in five minute intervals as I take a break from whatever work I might be doing inside the building. I enjoy my alone time early in the morning at my o...

These sprouted grains, although not suitable for traditional markets, can be used as a feedstuff for livestock according to Megan Van Emon, Extension beef cattle specialist. Based on research, sprouted grains have similar feed value to non-sprouted grains. Daily gains and feed efficiency in the f...
