  • Well...That Was Soup-er!

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Oct 16, 2024

A beautiful autumn day unfolded and was welcomed by the Senior Citizens Center staff for their annual soup luncheon. There were nine flavors of soup for the hungry appetites of those attending and no one went away hungry. The time was perfect for visiting, getting to know new people in the community and a great way to have lunch and not do dishes afterwards. Adding a new flavor to the selection, one was able to dine on and enjoy Johnny Cash's Chili, along with chicken noodle with homemade...

Blessing and her husband, Chris, bring a renewed and strengthened bond to the community and are looking forward to meeting more people in the community. The Blessings moved to Malta, having spent some time in Columbus, Montana, so the transition hasn't been too much of a change. She said they have experienced the Montana winters so...

  • Baaaaad Sheep.

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Oct 16, 2024

It was a calm Tuesday, nothing special going on in the quiet little village of Malta. The morning air had been crisp and the leaves which had turned gold, rust and were also crisp. It was looking to be another day of life in the zip code of 59538. Then, within minutes several individuals were posting on social media about the concern around a sheep loose and wandering the town. Within minutes, this reporter received several calls providing information about the ongoing event and the whereabouts...

  • Lowering Property Taxes & Protecting Public Access Are Top Issues In Montana

    Ryan Busse, Busse for Montana|Oct 16, 2024

I’ve put more than 100,000 miles on Montana’s highways over the past year, listening to people in every corner of our state. There are two issues that come up everywhere I go: The first is Gov. Greg Gianforte’s record high property taxes and the sky-high cost of living here. The second is the governor’s dangerous war on access to our public land and wildlife. While the cost of living in Montana has skyrocketed, Gov. Gianforte made the problem worse by raising property taxes by as much as 111%. Don’t let him point his finger at anyone else. The...

  • Development and Decline

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Oct 16, 2024

There are two Montanas. One struggles to control rampant development and growth. The other simply struggles to survive. Plans for a destination resort on 90 acres in Park County’s Paradise Valley are drawing heat from local residents. The development, which includes 100 cabins, a restaurant and retail space, will change the character of the area, they say. Opposition is growing. In Phillips County, where development is lacking and population is declining, there isn’t enough money to pay she...

  • I Really Missed My Better Half...

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Oct 16, 2024

I handled that better than I thought… For the past week, or what seemed like five years, my wife was in Michigan for a work conference. It was a different type of week because I had more alone time with the kids. Which was great! Instead of them venting to mom, I got to hear all of the details. I was responsible for every dinner and getting them to school on time with or without the newspaper deadline. My sons took it pretty well, though they struggled with the idea of her leaving. If you k...

  • Loring/Affinity News for Wednesday, October 16, 2024

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Oct 16, 2024

The fall always brings the migration of birds back south. Lots of geese and cranes have been sited and heard flying over! The robins and meadowlarks at Loring should be flying out soon if they haven’t already! Preconditioning of the cows is happening as they are moved to the winter pasture closer to the home place. Preconditioning is getting the calves ready for shipping. I hope the prices are high! I’ll be cleaning out my garden this week. I’ve saved seed from my cantaloupe which was very...

  • PC Sheriff Addresses Mill Levy Questions

    Sheriff Jerry Lytle|Oct 16, 2024

Greetings my fellow Phillips County citizens, I've been asked various questions regarding the public safety mill levy and the common themes are, "What am I getting for my money'?", and, "I never see a patrol vehicle drive by my residence. Why is this?" The answer to the first question is simple. Your public safety mill levy dollars pay for a dispatcher, sitting in a chair, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, awaiting your emergency or non-emergency phone call. The money also pays for the equipment (i.e. phone systems, radio...
