If you plan it, they will come. That was discovered by Katie Brown and the countless volunteers who hosted the first Hi-Line Heritage Celebration at the Milk River Pavilion in Malta last Saturday which raised over $50,000 to assist the Phillips County Livestock Association and other groups to help them cover costs associated with the American Prairie Reserve (APR) who are seeking a variance on a 2016 bison grazing ordinance passed in Phillips County which states "All bison/buffalo must be...
Roy and Arlene Brewer are sometimes hard to catch up with and last weekend was no exception. "We are on our way to Spring Falls, Idaho, for a special conference I am speaking at," Roy said in a phone interview somewhere on the highway between the couple's destination and their home in Graham, Wash. "I will be doing a spiritual emphasis at the church there." Traveling and teaching the Word of Jesus Christ is nothing new to the couple who has been married for the past 58 years. The couple has...
Let the holiday fun commence. The turning of the leaves to fall colors — and the occasional snow flurry — means the holiday season is upon us and the Malta Merchants will get the ball rolling next Thursday, October 24, with the Octoberfest Celebration and Christmas Scrip Kick-Off. Last year it was decided that the Parade of Lights would be moved into November and in its place, the family-fun Octoberfest and Christmas Scrip Kickoff, featuring a soup cookoff, scarecrow decorating contest, and business storefront decorating contest, would be hel...

I watched and listened in awe during my first year of hunting elk as a large bull screamed, nose flared, while he herded his cows from his bugling challenger. That was in 1979 and a lot has changed over the past 40 years. Today elk are plentiful in places where they were absent back then and on some forested public lands they are no longer as common. Predator populations are doing well, major fires are common place as our climate changes and hunting technology continues to advance. Landowner acceptance of elk has also changed, varying widely...
Sage grouse season closed last week. For the second year in a row I didn’t get one. I didn’t even see one. It wasn’t for lack of effort. I’ve been hunting more days than not since the upland bird season opened. The country I hunt used to be heavily populated by sage grouse. There were at least 40 males on a lek there last April. But come September, the birds weren’t to be found. I experienced the same thing last fall. Sage grouse have been disappearing from their traditional haunts for some...
INFO I meant to thrive but could only survive as our editor was on vacation. There is never a great time to get sick, but as Mark left town, an upper respiratory infection ran through me, making the week a lot harder than it needed to be. I tried to be a hero and work through it, but eventually I ran to the Phillips County Clinic. Before I got there, I couldn’t breathe, my body was sore from coughing, and I had a pounding headache. It took a while for the good doc to get to me, but I gathered th...
Happy Columbus Day! It sounds like the Heritage Day celebration was successful in Malta. Jay and Whitney Blunt were among the celebrants from out here. We had our second snowstorm on Monday and I'm hoping it's the last for a few weeks! I've had two great horned owls in my trees for a few days. The soft hoot in the evening and mornings is reassuring to me. I’ve seen several Hawks raiding the branches of my pine trees too! Bob and Kathleen Lumsden of Absorkee visited with Pete and Carol Lumsden o...

We have had more snow, wind and low temperatures all week. Winter seems to have moved its agenda up earlier. Our snow was very wet, mixed with rain so we did not have much cover on the ground. Night temperatures are very low, we have had heavy frost a couple of mornings. This weather has been a surprise, moving in so early and staying. Wednesday the roads all over were slick, icy, and in some places closed. Polly Solberg attended the Mini Gospel Jamboree in Malta on Sunday. Jack and Ethel Siemen...
