If you've been following our Phillips County Sheriff's Office Facebook page or saw my letter in the Phillips County News recently, you'll know the dire situation at your Sheriff's Office. I was overwhelmed by the public support of the Sheriff's Office, as well as the phone calls and letters of support the County Commissioners received in response to my letter explaining the current situation the Sheriff's Office was facing. With the Commissioners Generous help, we were able to balance the Sheriff's Office fiscal year 2025 budget and offer a...

  • The Lucky Valentines to Perform at MHS On October 21

    Oct 9, 2024

On Monday, October 21st, we welcome Montana's own, The Lucky Valentines. The Lucky Valentines have written upward of eighty songs, and use a mix of folk melodic sensibilities, tight harmonies, and a whole lotta love to make sad things beautiful. Their sound could be bottled up as "Bruce Springsteen and Patty Griffin meet Shovels and Rope in a Gypsy Junkshop". He sometimes uses a thirdhand suitcase as a kick drum, and the rotary phone from her father's shop as a mic. She blends classical violin...

  • Montana Is The Most Expensive It's Ever Been, Here's How To Lower Costs

    Ryan Busse, Busse for Montana|Oct 9, 2024

If you live in Montana, there’s no doubt you feel the sting of this sobering fact: Montana just surpassed California to become the most unaffordable state in the nation. That’s not political hype; that’s according to the National Association of Realtors. Out-of-state millionaires and billionaires are flooding into our state, buying up property and jacking up our prices, turning Montana into their own personal playground. Many of our small schools can’t afford to hire teachers or have five-day weeks. The Bozeman School District is trying...

This annual event offers a unique opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute to the well-being of our rural communities. The convention is much more than a gathering of agricultural professionals; it’s a place where vital conversations take place about the future of family...

  • That was Then. This is Now.

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Oct 9, 2024

Montana is known for extreme weather: raging blizzards, ferocious winds, bone-numbing cold. It was at Rogers Pass, after all, where the coldest temperature in the Lower 48 was recorded. Unpredictability was the state’s calling card, Chinook winds turned frigid January days balmy in a matter of minutes, early September snowstorms put an abrupt end to summer. Montana, like at least a dozen other states, embraced the saying “If you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes.” That was then. This is...

    Lesley Robinson, Montana Stockgrowers Association|Oct 9, 2024

Montana beef producers are faced with a number of challenges, and we don't all agree on how to overcome them. These issues are complicated, and often lead to tense conversations. Simply telling one another to get along isn't enough, so I would like to share some of the overarching issues facing everyone in the industry and what we can do to overcome them. Finding common ground is imperative for our future. At the end of the day, I believe that, deep down, all Americans want to get along with...

  • Malta XC Goes to Glasgow, To Host Home Meet

    Thea Solberg, For the PCN|Oct 9, 2024

The Malta cross country team headed east early Saturday morning to Fort Peck, the site of the annual Scottie Cross Country Invitational meet. While we drove east, the wicked west wind pushed us along and we soon arrived there at the Downsteam Campground (Kiwanis Park) there below the Fort Peck Dam. The races would start at the north end of the parking lot of Fort Peck Dam and Interpretive Center. The start of the races would mean that all runners would face the west and the wind and would run into it for over 400 meters or more until you got...

  • Penguin XC Attends Pride Land Invite

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 9, 2024

The Whitewater Penguins headed to Lockwood on Thursday, October 3rd for the Pride Land Invite. This was a new course for us to attend. We usually go to the Great Falls Invite this week but this worked better for our schedule. Thankfully it was a challenging course that pushed the kids to their limits. We only had two kids competing, Shelbi LaBrie and Sommer Green. This was a small meet with only 22 varsity girls and 23 jv girls consolidated into one race. There were some pretty good competitors with several Billings teams in attendance. The...
