  • The First Month of the Season

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Sep 27, 2023

The first month of the season has nearly run its course. What little green was left on the prairie vanished weeks ago, hiding out of sight over the creek banks. The rest of the country is the color of straw. The recent rains won’t make much difference except to turn dust to mud. Stock ponds that were brim-full in mid-summer shrunk to half their size by the first of September as hot winds blew and the ground cracked. Where there was good soil the grass grew waist high, but on the hard pan, o...

  • Dodson News for Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023

    Eldora Henry, PCN Correspondent|Sep 27, 2023

The fog was so heavy early Sunday morning that you couldn’t see a block away and then it moved away a little. Soon it came back heavier and thicker than before, I could hardly see my neighbor’s house. By noon the sun was shining, and it looked pretty good out. It was sure damp all day though. Mary and Doug Fauth of Rapid City, S.D., were here to visit for the day. They have been in Great Falls helping an uncle move into a nursing home and are now renovating his house. There was not much tra...

  • Loring News for Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Sep 27, 2023

We have had so many flies, way more than we’ve had in other years. And they really bother the cows too! I’ve only drank two that were in my coffee. Oh, brother, that’s bad now! The temperature has been really cool in the evenings, but it warms up during the day. We had a couple of days of sprinkles. It was really welcome. Loring got just over a quarter inch. I know Malta had much more because there was a lot of puddles. I’m still working on sorting everything from Mom and Dad’s farmhouse...

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Sep 27, 2023

To the Malta Athletic Club: You have given away enough guns to start a Civil War in Phillips County. Don’t you think it would be more practical to buy the athletes food, the bus gas, and uniforms instead of guns? Here in Whitewater, volleyball, cross country, and football are the present sports. Pat Dunbar’s grandson was injured in a football game. He is much better now. I’m not sure of his name, either Emmitt or Clayton. There was a volleyball game in Whitewater on Thursday. Dallas and Ashle...

Matthew Goodson, Public Contact Officer, Narconon New Life Retreat|Sep 27, 2023

Often one experiences grief when they suffer a loss that is difficult for them to handle. A person will “shut down” as a result of experiencing a loss or trauma usually due to being so overcome with negative emotion. Although this reaction to loss is normal, it can start a downward spiral for an addict. Lacking healthy coping mechanisms, the person is likely to abuse alcohol and drugs more frequently. The isolation brought on by having to stay indoors during the pandemic made life a great deal worse. The National Institute on Drug Abuse found t...

  • Malta Runs in Shelby and Frazer

    Thea Solberg, For the PCN|Sep 27, 2023

The Malta Cross Country Team didn’t have a doubleheader, but we doubled up this week. We had a meet in Shelby on Monday and then another one in Frazer on Thursday, all in the same week. It is not very often we participate in two meets in one week, but that’s how the schedule worked for us this year. And we capitalized on the fact that we had a free weekend, so we focused on getting in some good solid practices this past week and that paid off. We headed west on Monday to the annual Shelby Cross Country meet which is always a fun and fes...

  • Penguins Run in Frazer, LaBrie Takes Second Place

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Sep 27, 2023

The Penguins attended the Frazer Invite this last Thursday afternoon. If you’ve never been to a XC (cross country) race, this is the one to hit. It’s located outside of Frazer right next to the river. It is a beautiful area. It was pretty windy for most of the afternoon, but it seemed to die down when the girls started their race. Ava Hanley was planning to stick to her 8:30 split time with this course having three challenging hills. Shelbi LaBrie planned on easing into her first mile after struggling last week in Lewistown with her side aches....
