  • Antique Modes of Transportation Museum dedicated to Ezzie Ereaux on Sunday afternoon

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 17, 2014

On Sunday afternoon, nearly 200 people gathered outside the Antique Modes of Transportation Museum and Parking Lot on Highway 2 in Malta to catch a glimpse of Phillips County's newest museum. While the 1930 Model T and the "Mud Wagon" inside the new structure are a spectacular site and played a part in the large turnout, once the dedication speeches for the museum started it was easy to tell that most folks showed up to hear about the man the museum is in honor of, Claude Ezra "Ezzie" Ereaux....

  • Well, I had been warned

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Sep 17, 2014

I’d been warned. When Barb and I moved to Malta we were given a heads up about the wind, the cold, and the mosquitoes. Longtime Montana residents, we figured we’d already seen it all. Frigid temperatures are a given anywhere in Montana come winter. We used to live in Livingston where on occasion the wind blows train cars of the tracks, and we were also no strangers to mosquitoes. Or so I thought. Then I went hunting yesterday -- a short outing with Ace in search of sharptail grouse -- and end...

  • I've watched a lot of athletes carry the ball, and perhaps dropped it myself

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 17, 2014

I timed myself this past Friday. It takes me exactly four minutes to get from my back porch to the 50-yard line of the Mustangs football field. The only reason I timed myself on Friday is because for the second consecutive week, I made the walk back and forth, prior to kickoff, because I had left something vital to any reporter at home before the kickoff of each game. Two Fridays ago, said vital important was a pen. A reporter at an event without a pen is about a useful as a fork in a sugar bowl. The item I forgot this past Friday prior to the...

The Box Tops for Education coupon is about one inch in length and often found on the front of the box and towards the top. The Campbell Soup Company also offers a coupon program to help schools. • Team secures first two district wins

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Sep 17, 2014

In any sport, it is crucial to get wins in your own division or district, not overlooking any opponent or taking them for granted. Last week the M-ettes defeated Harlem and Poplar, while dropping a game against Chinook, who isn’t a district foe. “These games were important because it helps us practice and get better for harder teams that we will meet in divisionals,” said Markelle Lett, who is the M-ette team setter and captain. They will see tougher competition this week as they take on Glasg...

  • Stine brings a part of history to the PCN

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 17, 2014

Keith Stine dropped by the office of the PCN Monday morning after seeing the Phillips County Memories Photo of the 1939 Malta Mustangs Football team photo that ran last week. Keith, a junior on that 1939 team, said that though the team had a good season, it was not as good as the team's season in 1940 (he and Jack Lang were the Co-Captains of the '40 squad.) Back in those days, Class B Football in Montana didn't crown one state champ, but rather four regional champs. After Malta secured the...

The Poplar Indians football team came to town on Tuesday for the home opener for the Malta Mustangs Freshman and Sophomore squad. The two teams slugged it out to a 6-6 stalemate in regulation, sending the game into overtime. Poplar stopped the Mustangs and four down in the first frame of OT and booted a 20-yard field goal on fourth down to win the contest. Poplar doesn't field a varsity football team this season so their rosters featured 11 upperclassmen (seven seniors) but the young Mustang...
