    Mark Hebert, Sports Editor|Aug 28, 2019

In nearly all of the Saco Fun Days’ parades since 1982, Saco’s Robert Plouffe has lined-up second in the crowd, walking the parade route with the Honor Guard, carrying the American Legion Flag as he walks by the spectators, but this year, Plouffe will be first in line. “We picked Robert to be the Grand Marshal this year because of his military service, because of his long-time affiliation with the American Legion, and because of all he does for the town and people of Saco,” said Lacey Beil, S...

Wilma and Gary Plouffe will celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary this Thursday, August 29th, while participating in one of the things they love the most: The Milk River Wagon Train. When the 50th Annual Milk River Wagon Trains hits the trail in Zortman on Thursday, August 28 for their yearly, end of summer event, the Plouffes will be in tow, ready to go. “We started going in 1976,” Wilma said. “We always had wanted to and we still didn’t have a wagon then, but we went by horse that year.” On August 29, 1970, the couple wed and six years the...

  • I'm ready to hunt

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Aug 28, 2019

I put the boat away last weekend, and along with it, most thoughts of fishing. Oh, I’ll still cast a line a time or two, but probably no more than that. It’s time to hunt. Antelope season is already open in some areas, and upland bird starts Sept. 1. The wait’s been a bit longer this year. I usually finish the hunting season on New Year’s Day, but Barb got sick last year and I didn’t get a chance to go. Ever since, I’ve been anxious to make up for that day I missed. Cooler weather late in the...

  • Computer woes

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Aug 28, 2019

It was a wild week at the old Phillips County News as the computer of your “beloved” publisher decided to go belly up, deceased goldfish style, and if not for the help of “The GEEK” — AKA Malta School’s Computer guru and PCN IT specialist — Kelly McCann (see the old boy’s advertisement on page A4 this week) I am not sure how we would have put the paper together this week. Having the Microsoft “Blue Screen of Death” pop up on my monitors last Monday morning made my heart sink and my week much longer and stressful than usual. Without my computer...

  • James "Jim" Lee Mans

    Aug 28, 2019

Any time you ask someone to tell you about his motorcycle accident and he asks you which one, you can be sure he's lived every day of his life. Jim Mans received a diagnosis of Stage IV stomach cancer and was given six months to live. Eleven months past that, he was crossing off bucket list items: sky diving with his son, Kristopher. By the way, if he was here, he would tell you, "Jump, do it. It feels more like flying than falling." Then he would make sure every person who made his jump...

  • Loring News for August 28, 2019

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Aug 28, 2019

The rainy season hit us like a huge wave from the ocean! Combining in the area has ground to a halt! The crops had been producing a nice yield, but I'm not sure how the average will end up. I always like to stay positive, so at least we are able to harvest. Some people are using this downtime to build fences or rebuild them. The goldfinches are trying out my sunflower seeds. The birds are so bright yellow with black caps and have a soft song. Fran Compton of Douglas, Alaska, has been my house...

  • Malta construction updates with David Veseth for August 28, 2019

    Aug 28, 2019

One things that I got to witness two weeks ago was the installation of the new door and other items near the restrooms and laundromat at the MOI building as construction continues there. The construction workers took out a wall, installed new commodes, and put up a new window by the recycling center. Last week, workers were tasked with digging up water lines near my house on 4th Street, across Central Ave from the Phillips County Library. The water was shut off for a while after it was...

  • Phillips County Museum News for August 28, 2019

Fifty years – what an accomplishment! Hats (cowboy hats of course) Off to the present Milk River Wagon participants and to all those that have participated in the last 50 years. When a group of Phillips County residents conceived the idea of a Wagon Train from Zortman to Malta I’m sure fifty years of wagon trains never entered their minds. The journey from Zortman follows an old established trail that has been in use long before the settlers came to Montana. This area was well known for its abundant wildlife population and was camping gro...
