  • New Principal Arrives at MES

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Aug 21, 2024

From the "Plains" to the prairies, J. F. Hewitt, the new Elementary Grade School Principal for Malta, brings a new, fresh approach, probably a new idea or two, and undoubtedly has more than a handful of talents and skills he has acquired in his career and lifetime. Hewitt was born and raised in Missoula, Montana, and started his career in Polson teaching K-4th grade, with his degree in music. After two years, he moved to Noxon to teach; then moved back to Missoula where he taught general music...

The Duvall Bridge on the west end of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge will be closed until further notice due to safety concerns. Please visit the refuge website to view a map of the alternate route. During a routine inspection, staff determined the bridge had become unsafe for use. • The Sheriff's Office Needs Your Help

    Aug 21, 2024

To the Citizens of Phillips County, I reluctantly write this letter of advisement of the extreme situation your Sheriff’s Office faces. We do not offer competitive wages for deputies or office personnel. This makes it extremely difficult to recruit or retain employees. Now, we are dangerously short-handed. I have advised the Commissioners of the situation repeatedly and have asked for a competitive wage to make your agency a more desirable option for individuals wanting to get into law enforcement or leaving their current position as a law e...

  • What's Your Home Worth?

    Aug 21, 2024

Dear Editor, Do you own a home and wonder what it’s worth? You can easily look up your address on Zillow and see the estimated value is rapidly rising, translating to more property taxes. Too many Montana families cannot keep up with an annual $249-million property tax increase imposed by Republican Governor Gianforte and his party in the Legislature. Yet, after months of analysis by the Governor’s property tax task force, they recommended a complicated process that will raise our taxes again! Why didn’t they didn’t consider the new taxes t...

  • The Devil, He Be A Hidin'

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 21, 2024

I am a sucker for zoos. Tell me you’ve got some sort of exotic critter in a cage out back and I’ll cough up a few bucks to see it. To that end, I’ve visited some marvelous zoos in this country and across the globe. The San Diego Zoo tops my list closely followed by the Royal Dutch Zoo in Amsterdam and the Emperor Valley Zoo in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Woodland Park Zoo is a must-see whenever I’m in Seattle, as is the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens when Barb and I visit Palm Springs. Atlanta...

  • Sherman Von Holzhey (May 13, 1967 - August 15, 2024)

    Aug 21, 2024

Sherman Von Holzhey, 57, passed away unexpectedly on August 15, 2024, in Malta, Montana. Born in Havre, Montana on May 13, 1967, he had a rough start to life, needing life-saving surgery at just a few weeks old. He grew up in the south country like many other farm and ranch kids. Von attended Sun Prairie School and Malta High School, where he participated in 4H and wrestling. After Von earned a degree in accounting from MSU Bozeman, he returned to the ranch where he was able to enjoy shooting...

  • Seasons Are Changing

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Aug 21, 2024

Out of necessity, this seems like an opportunity waiting to merge forth like the ever-so-soon approaching season changes. Seasons, as in season of summer freedom coming to an end! Wow, we started early, compared to many schools across the state that are beginning this week by opening the doors to education with a breath of freshness and “somewhat” renewed energy. Add to this a new four-day school week format with longer days...and a full moon coming up...nah...I’ll stick with where I am! Perhaps more prominent for some of you readers was the n...

  • Phillips County Museum News for Wednesday, August 21, 2024

    Rose Teske, P. C. Museum Curator|Aug 21, 2024

In 1918, a wildcat oil rigger testing in the area for oil struck a gushing well of hot water at approximately 3,100 feet. Gas also flowed from the well so drilling was abandoned. Over time water bubbled out from around the old casing and formed a pool. Elbert Davison, a Saco rancher on the Great Falls Ranch had a son stricken with polio. He built a box out of planks around the hot mineral well and would bring his son there to soak in the hot flowing water. Other people soon began bathing in the water so a larger box was built out of railroad...

  • Loring/Affinity News for Wednesday, August 21, 2024

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Aug 21, 2024

What a welcome sight to see as I came across the North Bench, there were so many bales in the fields and stacked! They look really nice! The crops were in the middle of harvest and the combines were all resting! It had rained and given the farmers a little reprieve. Rodney Stordahl spent the week in Billings with Zoey. She came over for a couple of days to swim and paint. Then I came home with Rod. He dropped me off at Williams in Landusky where Lu Besel was visiting, and we attended the...

My daughter (Gale) and I went for a ride to Whitewater Dam, north of Whitewater. The dam used to be called Christofferson Dam. Adam Hellie plans on going antelope hunting in the Havre area. • St. Mary's Water Issue Update

Kari Hould and Marko Manoukian, PCN Staff and St Mary Rehabilation Working Group Co Chair|Aug 21, 2024

Marko Manoukian planned to go to Washington, D.C., in July to testify on the House Bill related to the Ft. Belknap Water Compact that U. S. Representative Matt Rosendale was carrying, but due to a microsoft issue he was not able to make the trip. “I do know that all the bills including (MT. Representative Ryan) Zinke’s have been approved out of committee, but the House is unsure what they are going to do with them and they need the full vote of the House now to move forward.” Manoukian said the good thing about Rosendale’s bill, which is the...

  • The 5th Annual "Craig" a Success

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Aug 21, 2024

The stands began to fill, and the crowd was ready for a great show with action and they weren't disappointed. As the heat began to release its intensity, those attending were treated to a fine showing of skills, talents and dedication to a sport that is still alive in rural Montana. The 5th Annual Craig is a rough stock rodeo dedicated in memory of Craig Mangis, a long-time supporter of rodeos, kids, family, and ranch life. Saturday night's action started out on a "low" level, so to speak, with...

  • Next Year Country

    Haylie Shipp, Ranchers Stewardship Alliance|Aug 21, 2024

If walls could talk, the pistachio green surface of Sally Austin's kitchen would instantaneously have you settled in over a cup of steaming Folgers. A gallery of framed photos, some slightly askew, tells the story of the 70 years Austin has lived on the ranch. Tucked among them, funeral programs and a well-worn flyswatter remind you of life's unvarnished realities. Legacies experience loss. Ranches have bugs. Perched atop a cushioned kitchen chair, Austin reflects on the history of the 125...

  • Malta Gardeners Group Announces Winners

    Mary Shores, For the PCN|Aug 21, 2024

Hi, I was asked to write a bit about our contest in Malta Gardeners Group. We always have really fun things to do in this group and the primary reason for this group is to get people back into gardening and back into the great outdoors. We would also like to get farmers' markets started in this area and get more people starting businesses by selling what they produce. There is nothing more rewarding than growing your own food and teaching the next generation how to grow, cook with, and preserve...
