Malta Trails Inc., through grants and community support, have raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars for the first two phases of their trails projects with the hopes that community members will get outdoors to walk and bike their way to a healthy lifestyle. "This all started when I started walking for exercise," said Malta Trails member Laura Pankratz. "Once you get out of the house and into the community, you really start to see things that are needed in Malta. We don't have continuous si...
The Malta School Board met for their final meeting of the summer last Wednesday night and among what they heard was the enrollment for three schools, a pay raise for substitutes and the promise of a district wide Facebook page to keep parents and students updated as to the goings on of the district. During the administrator reports Malta Elementary School Principal Theodore Schye told the trustees that enrollment should be at about 15-to-20 more students at the school with a kindergarten class consisting of just under 40 students making this...
Dwight Pfeifer, a former owner and publisher of the Phillips County News, scratched one of the items off of his bucket list last week when he arrived in Malta and strolled into the offices of the PCN to see how his former newspaper was doing. In 1973 Pfeifer bought the PCN from a family who ran cattle in the county. For the next seven years Pfeiffer was the head honcho in Malta running Phillips County News. Pfeifer, now 72, started in journalism when he purchased his first paper located in...

As a retired teacher trying to stay out of trouble, Editor Mark Hebert has been kind enough to let me try my hand at journalism. Because the greater Malta-Dodson-Saco area has recently been blessed with several new teachers, I thought it might be helpful to share some community pointers with them. As they have undoubtedly noticed, Malta is blessed with ‘skeeters. Not only do we have our own swarm, but the Malta mosquitoes have invited their Saco cousins to come and take a dip in the large pool located near the corner of Central and 4th S...
Here’s a new twist on bucket biology: Paulo Reservoir south of Glasgow will be drained this week due to an unauthorized introduction of carp. At first it sounded far-fetched. After all, who in the world wants more carp? They already seem to be thriving everywhere. Why plant them in a little bass and bluegill pond in the middle of nowhere? It’s not like the illegal introduction of lake trout in Yellowstone Lake. I can imagine a couple of anglers 20 years or so ago speculating how big lakers mig...
One of the first things I learned in sports reporting 101 was not to be a homer. The professor who taught me this – one Michael Downs – took this so seriously that even when he would attend a game with his wife, on his own time and not as a reporter, he would sit there quietly and not cheer or clap, just observe. This man taught me more about journalism than any one person. I’d say 99 percent of what he taught me I try to apply to my reporting today. Not being a homer...eh, not so much. The idea behind not being a fan of any one team while...
This year the Malta Middle School will switch to a full trimester schedule, doing away with quarters and semesters of years past, according to Principal Shawn Bleth. Bleth said the changes hinges on scheduling conflicts as well as confusion on grading and report cards sent to parents. “Before, we had activity classes that where trimester based and then regular core classes were quarter and semester based,” Bleth said at last Wednesday night’s school board meeting. “Now, whenever a report card goes home, it all means the same thing. A final g...

Back to school. Back to school, to prove to Dad that I’m not a fool. I got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, I hope I don’t get in a fight. Ohhhh, back to school. Back to school. Back to school. Well, here goes nothing. For those of you who don’t know, that was a quote from Adam Sandler’s 1995 cult-classic movie Billy Madison, in which was movie about an adult, who had to go back to grade school in order to inherit his father’s hotel business and prove to his father he wasn’t completely l...
On August 2 through the third the Malta swim team went to Conrad for the state meet. The team didn’t place amongst the top teams this year, however there were several swimmers that placed in the top ten of their respective divisions. “The kids swam hard. They put in a lot of effort as Malta kids do,” Malta Swim Team Coach Donnie Lynn told the PCN. “That’s one thing I have no complaints about. They swam hard and to the best of their abilities.” Coach Lynn believed that the team could’ve placed higher as a team if all of their swimmers were...
In today's world, a lot of people might put their nose up to you if they heard you were chopping down trees, because that's the kind of world we live in. There are also a lot of people that would sue a town if a tree fell on them or if they broke a bone from falling from a tree. The truth is sometimes trees simply need to come down. As is the case at Trafton Park. Jim Brown the director of Malta public works and his crew have been cutting down unsafe trees for the past couple of weeks. "The...
