  • Town of Saco to hold special election for mosquito control

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 17, 2016

The Town of Saco has given notice that it will hold a special election on Tuesday, September 20 in hopes of approving additional mills to raise $20,000 to permanently fund mosquito control. "We won't necessarily use the entire $20,000 each year," Mayor Simpson said. "But we also want to have a surplus for equipment and if the price of chemical goes up." The special election will be conducted by mail ballot only and ballots will be sent to eligible, registered voters on September 1. Saco Mayor Clint Simpson said that each year it costs the Town...

As a way of saying "thank you" to their customers, the staff at Westside Self Service will throw a huge party this Saturday in Malta. "We want the entire family to come down for this community event," Bridgett Ereaux, who owns the stores with her husband Bob, said. "It is our way of saying thank you to our customers and to the community as a...

  • Fly fishing is fun, I had forgotten

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Aug 17, 2016

I’ve fished since I was a child, but I didn’t get hooked until I started using a fly rod. I was probably 12 or 13 when Dad showed me how to cast tiny foam-rubber spiders for bluegill. It wasn’t long before I got the hang of it, and could put that spider where I want-ed. I’d twitch it a time of two, then raise the rod tip when the bug was engulfed by a rising fish, and feel the line go taut. It wasn’t the way most folks fished in Indiana, but it gave me a leg up when I moved to Montana....

  • Questions about water construction

    Aug 17, 2016

Dear Editor, Driving around the west side of town have noticed several water "spots" where new water pipes have been placed and are leaking? Some of these "spots" have been there for some time. Why have they NOT been repaired? Also why is a new street torn up before leaks are repaired? Currently why is the water being placed in the street on the East street of Malta High School starting now when school is about to start? Hopefully someone from the company doing the job will contact me and let me know why this project has so many pipes leaking....

  • You have the power, until you don't

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 17, 2016

I had a very interesting conversation with several Phillips County residents from several different Phillips County entities last Wednesday at the Great Northern Lodge Room. The topic of the day was “what if the power was out for a week, how would your organization manage and how would our community of Malta respond and potentially help each other?” The meeting was in conjunction with the Local Emergency Planning Committee and though the person who invited nor the person in charge of the meeting showed up for this get-together, once we fig...

  • Where's Daaaa Points?

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 17, 2016

I don’t know how the start of football season could be so exhilarating and heart-breaking at the same time. It’s the life of a Bears fan I suppose. The only end zone my team sniffed was either when our defensive backs got torched for a touchdown pass or when our quarterback was sacked for a safety. It was bad. While the preseason isn’t a complete measuring stick of a football team, it was depressing seeing every other team playing last Thursday score touchdowns and field goals, while the Bears f...
