  • 108th Annual Phillips County Fair Livestock Show and Sale

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Aug 9, 2023

Opening day of the Phillips County Fair! The same jitters and last minute rush that was felt in 1915 were once again surfacing and making the rounds. The crunch for time, juggling schedules, vehicles, drivers and hot baked goods out of the oven was there...just a different generation. August started to grasp onto Father Time and the fair was here before one knew it, another year older. There is little that has been done to the fairgrounds, other than readjusting, compromising and getting...

Miles from home, but at home where he was right then, Tanner Laws opened up a night of country music for the 2023 Phillips County Fair-goers. A bright and beaming young face greeted the audience with his own songs that tell the story of his life and the life of a country boy. Tanner lives in Thompson Falls and has been active on the road singing at weddings, county fairs, bars, taverns and anyplace that wants to hear his music. The young man said, "I love it up here in Dodson, I hope to be back...

  • Something Strange Happened on the Water

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 9, 2023

While running the boat down the lake last week I spotted what looked like a bird of some sort on the water. Expecting it to fly as we passed, I was surprised when it didn’t. I slowed the boat, and turned around to investigate. As we got closer I could see it was a young gull. Grabbing the landing net I scooped up what turned out to be two birds hooked together on a fishing lure. Each gull was impaled on a treble hook through the beak. They were barely moving, but when I twisted the hook out o...

  • Why does the P.C. Fair Bring So Much Joy?

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Aug 9, 2023

This week marks my tenth Phillips County Fair. Prior to moving to Malta, I hadn’t experienced a county fair. I love this time of year because it is the highlight for so many in our community. Fair time just feels different than any other time of the year. In nearly every weather situation at the fair, including rain, heat, or clouds of mosquitoes, generally people are happy. There is a legitimate feeling of joy that radiates through the air. Maybe it’s the fair burgers at the 4-H or Boy Scout bo...

It sounds like the Phillips County Fair was a roaring success again this year! 108 years in a row, now that has to be something to be proud of! I did not feel well so I opted to stay home. Lu Besel came over on Sunday morning to see some of the stuff I’ve been finding in the trunks and totes from the farm. We picked chokecherries at Cindy Clark’s also. Cindy has a few great bushes that the birds hadn’t ravished yet! At senior meals, we were surprised by Jeanie Green! It was fun to see and visit...

The Fair has been in full swing, and I have even enjoyed some of the concerts sitting on my back porch. Congratulations to all the ribbons and awards the kids received. They work long and hard with the animals and do a good job. And of course, the Indian Relay Races are always so nice to watch and enjoy. Velyma Broadhead returned home from hot Arizona and other places on Sunday evening. She said Arizona was really hot and dry, with no rain since May. Guests staying at the home of Polly Solberg...
