As the gates closed down on Sunday night at the 109th Phillips County Fair, it joined the other 108 and became "just a memory." There are tired, sleepy, and perhaps even grumpy children today, up to the age of 96, that are glad it is over. There were quite a few changes in activities this year at the fair. Last Saturday had actually been the official kick-off of the fair with the horse judging at the Milk River Pavilion. Then on Monday, the small animal judging was held at the pavilion, as well....
While the barns were seeing a bit of action, between the horses naying, porkers squealing, turkeys gobbling and hens sitting patiently (*hens don't make noise)...there is the other side of 4-H and Open Class and entries this year were up. Again, the name of the game was Fan City, as efforts were made to maintain the temperature were almost futile...but they made it! The talents of the youth in the County was portrayed in the various means of medium used by the kids, from painting, beadwork,...

On Thursday, August 1, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) and the Milk River Joint Board of Control updated stakeholders on the rehabilitation efforts following the St. Mary siphon failure on June 17. The failure halted water transfers from the St. Mary system, resulting in widespread water shortages throughout the Milk River basin. Steven Darlinton with the Bureau of Reclamation reported that NW Construction is conducting the rehabilitation of the failed siphon site through a modification to the...
The United States cattle industry has been trying to provide a hungry population with protein while fighting off attacks from all sides. Unfortunately, we are losing: cattle numbers and the number of ranches keep declining. The complaints ranged from overgrazing to negatively impacting biodiversity (most ranches are vastly more biodiverse than any city or suburb) and the current ridiculous claim that cows burping is changing the worldwide climate (don’t other ungulates, including bison, also burp?). Now ranchers in the ecoregion called the N...
Dear Editor and PCN Readers, My name Is Richard Barnard, I am the American Legion Post Commander of Saco Post 79. With a college education costing over ninety thousand dollars, according to the latest figures, that is no small chunk of change. An ambitious student willing to put forth t...
Staying fit isn’t easy, especially as I grow older. It becomes harder all the time to avoid my slothful ways. To that end my smart watch keeps track of my daily exercise goals, encouraging me to step it up if I’m falling short, and praising me when a goal is achieved. “Take a 20-minute walk to close your exercise and move goals,” the watch will tell me as I’m curled up on the couch with a beer. I rarely respond. While I typically start the day with good intentions, by noon I’ve lost most of my...

Did you know that the Whitewater townsite wasn’t always where it is today? Whitewater was originally located at what is now called Forks. One building from Old Whitewater remains standing. That is the Forks Hall which was built in 1916. The Hall was built by the community when they saw a need for a gathering place to hold events. The original hall had a stage for plays and orchestras. The stage was removed so a small apartment could be made to provide housing for U.S. Immigration and Customs employees who were stationed at Whitewater. A m...

Temps reached over 100 degrees during the Phillips County Fair Indian Relay and Chariot Races, but that didn't stop the event from filling the stands last Friday, August 2, in Dodson. The event, organized by the Northeast Corner Committee, was ultimately won by BirdinGround Relay Team from the Crow reservation. The PCN caught up with rider Tristan BirdinGround, who had been riding in relays since he was 15 years old. He has competed at the PC Fair with River Road in past years, and was second...

"It's like it feels really good considering that I put the car together in three days, along with watering the track and trying to...
