  • Heels over head...at the Phillips County Fair

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Aug 7, 2019

As the sun started to set on during Friday night at the 104th Phillips County Fair, the grandstands started to fill and the first of two headline acts, the Casey Donahew Band, took to the stage to set the night's concert off right. "Here is a love song, so if you are in love with someone, stare into their eyes for the next three minutes," Casey Donahew instructed the crowd. As the night carried on, the second headline act of the night, the Randy Rogers Band, took center stage and sang well into... Full story

  • 4-H Champs Crowned

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 7, 2019

It was a rough day of showmanship for the senior class of the 2019 4-H Beef Show at the P.C. Fair on Friday, August 2. The first heat of the showmanship went as smooth as can be, with 4-H Judge Collin Gibbs selecting eventual Grand Champion Kendall Moore and third place finisher Pierce Mortenson to come back for the championship round. The second group faced challenges and a little bad luck as a few of the steers didn't cooperate with the temperatures quickly rising at the Dodson fairgrounds....

  • Trying my luck

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Aug 7, 2019

I guess I’ve just been lucky. For nearly half a century I’ve wandered the backcountry of Yellowstone Park without ever being mauled by a bear or gored by a bison. I seldom followed the stay-75-feet-away-from-wild-animals rule, often wandering too close to critters that could hurt me. Especially bison. My close encounters were usually the result of laziness: I simply didn’t want to leave the trail and walk farther than planned. In my misspent youth I actually sought out confrontations with bison...

  • I love 'van'?

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 7, 2019

I know I was skeptical at first per my previous write up about our new vehicle. But I have been driving our family minivan for a week or so and I love it. I know praising the room, comfort and dependability of our van does not give me my cool card back, but I think I actually like this thing. I have had my product at various events and farmer’s markets and all I can say is wow. I packed that van down with my supplies and had plenty of room for my family and other things. I love the fact that our...

  • Loring News for August 7, 2019

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Aug 7, 2019

What a week of summer weather! High temps and plenty of wind! And even at night, it didn't cool down much. But that is what summer is in Montana! Only one night of warm temps and that may be more noticeable to me this summer since I don't have many windows open. Lightning and thunder for a couple of nights, too. No fires started so far and still no solid rain, praise the Lord! The baby robins are really demanding of their parents! Their little squawk is not so pleasant right now. But it does get...

  • Jaynes survives crash, wins Fair AMX

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 7, 2019

The 104th Phillips County Fair's AMX event did not fail to entertain as the event featured thrills, spills, crashes and even a fire. The event started with a startling crash as Great Fall's Jamie Jaynes, formerly of Dodson, lost control of his vehicle in the hot laps, crashed into the barricade and peeled off the roof of his car. "So coming out of the east corner my right rear tire went over the berm and it just caught and flung my car into the fence," Jaynes said. "I think just the thought of...

  • Derby packs out Grandstands

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 7, 2019

Sometimes it's not about the money. The Grandstands and Beer Gardens were packed during the 104th Annual Phillips County Fair's Crash for Cash Demolition Derby and those in attendance bore witness to plenty of twisted metal, fire, big hits, and a special moment for a community that lost a young man too soon. During the Chain car event, Malta's Trey Shores could be seen driving a 1974 Dodge Coronet that was sponsored by several companies throughout the Phillips County community, but the trunk of...

  • Dodson News for August 7, 2019

    Eldora Henry, PCN Correspondent|Aug 7, 2019

Another successful fair has come and gone--quite well attended and enjoyed in spite of the very hot temperatures during the days. Thanks to all who worked hard and helped make it a success. The kids in 4H worked hard with their animals and did a good job. It was sad to hear Bill Johnson of Arizona had died this week. Bill grew up in Dodson and attended school here, graduating in 1965. Sympathy is sent to the Johnson family in their loss. Harvest will be in high swing now. The dry heat has...
