  • 4-H clubs in Phillips County show animals at 100th Fair

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 5, 2015

The 100th Annual Phillips County Fair was presented with a plethora of fine an-imals from the Phillips County 4-H Clubs. Though there were many students and livestock animals that stood out, none stood-out as much as this year's stock of market champions and reserve champions who were: Reserve Champion Market Lamb raised by Danie Rhodes was purchased by Jones Brothers Hay for $6.00 a pound; Reserve Champion Market Swine raised by Carson Ottinger was purchased by Triangle Telephone for $6.00 a...

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 5, 2015

In District Court in Malta at the end of July, one person was sentenced to three years probation for drug charges stemming from 2014 and another was due to enter a plea on recent drug charges, but became sick while in the courthouse and left to go to the emergency room. State of Montana versus Alexa Whitright On Monday, July 27 in District Court, Whitright accepted a plea deal with the State of Montana which will leave her on probation for the next three years. Whitright was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a dangerous drug, a...

  • Open Class exhibitors total 340 at 100th PC Fair

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 5, 2015

The number of exhibitors at the 100th Phillips County Fair was 100 more than a year ago and paid out nearly $1,000 more than the 99th. "A total of 91 of the exhibitors are new this year," Joy Linn said. "We expected to be up this year since this was the 100th. We are very happy with the turnout." Linn attributed the large increase in the new exhibitors to an influx of Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line, Malta Extension participants taking part in this year's Open Class categories. "I would say a...

  • Finding a use for the daily fish wrap

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Aug 5, 2015

The newspaper industry has been in decline for some time now. Coincidentally, that decline began about the time I got into the business. Just like fishing, it was another case of you should have been here yesterday. I remember laughing at the concept of folks sitting on the toilet reading the news on computers. I thought of that this morning while perched on the porcelain throne perusing my smart phone for Donald Trump quotes. But while I’ve begun to embrace this new technology and waste way t...

  • So many adjectives to describe Dodson School Reunion

    Aug 5, 2015

Dear Editor, WOW is just one of the many adjectives I heard this weekend to describe the 100th Fair and the All School Reunion in Dodson. The Reunion Committee did an outstanding job! The food was great, the auction turned out perfect and a good time was had by all at the dance! The janitorial staff at the school had it looking absolutely fantastic. The Fair Board, who always do a great job, outdid themselves this year for a truly wonderful event. The exhibits were up and the midway was just right. Thank you from the Town of Dodson and Alumni...

  • Public lands under siege by APF

    Aug 5, 2015

Dear Editor, Once again our public lands are under siege by the American Prairie Foundation. BLM and State leases are targets to be controlled by the APF for free ranging bison. These are not wild bison. "Wild" is being used as false advertising by the APF to collect money from environmentalists. BLM and DNRC must change "class of livestock" to authorize domestic/hybrid bison on public lands. Bison cannot be authorized on public land period. Bison are destructive to the range resource and to the wildlife habitat we have now. A fence will not...

  • Foot and Mouth Disease...do they really care?

    Aug 5, 2015

Dear Editor, FMD is a very contagious viral disease of cloven hoofed animals, wild and domestic. It causes high fever, lameness so severe the animal often refuses to stand, severe slobbering, and refusal of food. Most animals recover after an outbreak, but the disease can lead to permanently unhealthy individuals. The viral strain involved and the species sickened causes wide variations in signs of the initial disease and the lingering after effects. Just like the annual debate about which flu strain will be prevalent this winter, the disease...

  • Call me the 'Corndog King'

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 5, 2015

To eat one more hand-dipped corndog would risk possible combustion. Another cup of lemonade would surely make my teeth fall out. There is no way I could stomach another cheeseburger – as awe-some as they are – nor does my stomach have room for one more fried onion…well, maybe room for just one. The 100th Annual Phillips County Fair came to a close yesterday after-noon and in my estimation, it was a huge success. Now I don’t have receipts to back this claim. I don’t know if the four day event was profitable (and by profitable I mean it made t...

  • Dodson News for August 5, 2015

    Eldora Henry, PCN Correspondent|Aug 5, 2015

The big 100 year celebration of the continuous Phillips County Fair and the Dodson All School Reunion are over after a busy and fanfare laden weekend. It was so nice to see the fairgrounds and the Town spruced up and so many campers, RVs and trailers, (and big pickups). (Cars are going to be outlawed one of these days!) It was really wonderful to see so many of the “older” graduates from earlier years that came back and attended this year. Since I had kids in school during the 50s, 60s and 70s...

Nearly 220 past Dodson School attendees and their families converged in Coyote Country this past weekend to attend the 100th All Class Reunion for the school, some sticking around the next day to take part in a parade that coincided with the 100th Phillips County Fair. • On the other side of the shutter

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 5, 2015

If you were fortunate to make your way to the free stage at times throughout the fair you would have seen some pretty astounding talent. One act that was rather impressive and at times suspenseful and other times hilarious was that of Mike and Mitchell of Saskatoon Canada, who go by the name of "Double Vision." I was enjoying the show with my wife Susan and son P.J. when the unthinkable happened. Crowd participation. Typically if you see a guy with a camera, you leave that guy alone because...

  • After 17 hours of labor, Anderson wins AMX stock car race at 100th Annual Fair

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 5, 2015

Though the track for AMX racing has been the same for years, one man knew the track a little bit better than all other competitors at the 100th Annual Phillips County Fair event and it paid off. Dodson's Travis Anderson had the AMX track looking amazing after an astounding 17 hours of prep work and for his hard work, he took home First Place in the Stock Class Championship last Saturday. He was asked how it felt to win that race. "Like usual," Anderson said with a smile. "At least I finally fini...

Chinook's Powell wins P.C. Fair Demo Derby; Havre's Kultgen shows grit, determination For the first time in five years, the Phillips County Fair hosted a demolition derby and the event holding nearly 900 was a success. The event featured plenty of "rock'em sock'em" action and was highlighted by a win by Chinook's Garrett Powell. Powell won the Calcutta round, which was also the Championship Round of the derby. Among the highlights of the evening was Havre's Ashlee Kultgen, who had the crowd's...
