    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jul 17, 2019

As concerns about speeding automobiles around the City of Malta continue to worry local residents, Malta Mayor John Demarais asked the Malta City Council to consider budgeting for the purchase of mobile, radar speed indicator signs that could be used at trouble areas around the city, including parks, daycares, near schools and on Highway 2 near Dairy Queen. Mayor Demarais showed the Malta City Council Aldermen printed pictures of the signs similar to ones used in Glasgow, but smaller than those used when entering that town from the West. “I w...

  • 'Life is a brilliant thing!'

    Janice Reichelt, L.A.C. Chair|Jul 17, 2019

This is what I wish that I had thought of saying when I was the MC for the Suicide Prevention Play last week, but sometimes we don’t think of things in time! It would have been a good ending to the play that focused on evoking thoughts of everything from falling in love to the smell of rain. Ryan, the actor, in the one-man show pulled it off and subtlety enlightened the public on the issue of suicide. He acted out the usual communication sequence that could happen when a child is involved with suicide and the fact that the child often has m...

7-10. Happy birthday to all July birthdays including my daughters, Gale Young and Teresa Dyck. The Milk River Gospel Jamboree featured wonderful singers, musicians, and a great comedian. The music was beautiful and inspirational. Several groups were from Canada and they were all wonderful. There was also a family group from Michigan with a daughter in tow who could yodel like a cowgirl. Several people from Whitewater attended the events, including myself. Sally Austin won some auction items and...

  • Phillips County Museum News for July 17 , 2019

    Lori Taylor, P.C. Museum Curator|Jul 17, 2019

It’s almost harvest time in Phillips County. Local farmers are busy cleaning granaries and preparing for this year’s crops. Historically, horses and small tractors did much of the work, now we have a large tractor and GPS units to help the farmers of today. In 1941 the Hall/Westerman family wanted to move a 25,000-bushel wood elevator from Chapman, Mont., through Loring, Mont., to their farm southeast of Loring. Was this possible with the tractors and equipment available in the 1940’s? The answer is yes with a little “Montana ingenui...

  • Loring New for July 17, 2019

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Jul 17, 2019

Just the typical summer days for this week, hot, high temps in the 90’s then afternoon or evening storms that don't last long but still make me worry! Today for instance, I was driving back from Turner all the while watching a big black storm cloud to the south west! Right when I was coming out of the sag about two miles from home the wind and dust came up, with tumble weeds flying above my car and a little rain. I thought it might be a tornado or wind event, but it only lasted about 10 m...

  • Wishing elms well

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Jul 17, 2019

I have a love/hate relationship with Chinese elms. I fight them at my home in Malta where they litter the yard with seedpods, and grow like weeds. At the cabin on Fort Peck Lake, however, three large ones provide shade and privacy, and are often filled with songbirds. But it doesn’t really matter how I feel about them, the trees appear to be dying. They didn’t put out any seed this spring and leafed out in an odd manner. Instead of sprouting leaves at the ends of the branches, the leaves cam...

  • A joy of Summer time

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 17, 2019

Yeah, I quit for about five years. But when on the keto diet, it helps to have healthy snack options, which is why I dove right back into eating sunflower seeds. I normally eat those jokers by the handful, with a spit cup at my desk. I can’t get enough of them. I have tried almost every flavor that Phillips County stores have on hand and I have to say that like five years ago, David Jumbo BBQ is my favorite at the moment. During this binge of sunflower seeds, I have also realized that I am n...

    David Veseth, PCN Construction Reporter|Jul 17, 2019

On Sunday morning, I came across a felled tree near the Malta Woman's Club House on 4th Street. The storm happened a week ago, and maybe lighting struck it and knocked it down, or maybe it was the high winds and we did have a tornado warning in effect the night before....

  • Dodson News for July 17, 2019

    Eldora Henry, PCN Correspondent|Jul 17, 2019

A large gathering of relatives and friends came together for the placing of the ashes of Kimberly Solberg Adkins at a graveside service on Sunday afternoon at the Dodson Cemetery. Actual funeral services were held in Great Falls on Friday and quite a few of the Solberg were able to attend them too, including Polly Solberg. We always feel so bad when we lose someone so young. Everyone gathered later at the Lutheran Church for lunch and fellowship. It was nice to see so many people we don't see...

  • Fort Peck Reservoir Chinook salmon egg collection and stocking looks promising

    Marc Kloker, MFWP Region 6|Jul 17, 2019

Good news for Chinook salmon anglers: Fort Peck Reservoir and hatchery crews recently stocked record numbers of Chinook salmon fingerlings into Fort Peck Reservoir, with over 534 thousand being stocked this spring. Initially, the outlook from the fall 2018 egg collection efforts did not look very promising. Due to fewer mature females being present in the system due to limited stockings during 2015 and 2016, FWP Fisheries and hatchery personnel were only able to collect just over 110 thousand eggs last fall. On a positive note, with the few...
