  • Road Trip

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 1, 2015

Little did the eight cyclists from St. Paul's School (SPS) know when they woke up in Rudyard on Sunday morning, but Sunday afternoon would be the toughest day of peddling the eight high school students would endure thus far during their 3,800-mile, 48-day bicycle trek across the United States in support of veterans . "It took us a little while," joked Jade Thomas, one member of the eight person crew. "And it is so cold out." Thomas' latter comment was in regards to the thermometer sitting at...

  • Malta City Council 'rights a wrong' from 2007

    M, Editor|Jul 1, 2015

At the Malta City Council meeting last Tuesday night, the board members approved a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) following a public hearing so they and the mayor could undo a mistake made by the council in 2007 – well before any of the board members or current mayor were in office – by allowing a residential area in the Central Business District. Prior to the public hearing, Malta Mayor Shyla Jones explained that a CUP is a zoning exception which allows a property owner use of his land in a way not otherwise permitted within the particular zon...

  • A rare win-win for everybody

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jul 1, 2015

A plan to poison Soda Butte Creek offers a rare win-win opportunity for everyone involved. Non-native brook trout live in the upper stretches of the stream which heads in the mountains above Cooke City and flows into Yellowstone National Park. Federal and state fisheries biologists want the brookies removed because they compete with native cutthroat trout for habitat and food. Officials plan to use rotenone to kill all the fish in Soda Butte Creek upstream from Ice Box Canyon. Here’s a better i...

  • A call to arms: Hide your dogs and small children

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 1, 2015

I just heard that there was a time where Malta was crop dusted with mosquito killer. And it worked. I’m sure there are a plethora of reasons why the town isn’t crop dusted anymore, but if that time comes again, I will literally stand outside and inhale anything that kills these little biters. Around this time last year, I went on a rant about mosquitoes and I hope it encouraged just one per-son to be vigilant and nuke their own yard with mosquito killer. This season as clouds of mosquitoes ter...

  • A wild week in the USA

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 1, 2015

It was a wild week in the United States. Take your pick of controversial topics that, it seems, are on the verge of splitting this nation in two. Maybe that is a hyperbolic opening to this week’s column, but if my Facebook page is any indication of the statement, maybe not. I will not weigh in on what I think about the hot topics that went down last week as it would only serve to alienate half of you in the end. I will say that my “Facebook Friends” are made up of folks from dozens of different states, races, religions and political ideal...
