  • Large crowd welcomes Ament, Skatepark in Malta

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jun 29, 2016

In the movie Field of Dreams, Ray Kinsella hears a whisper telling him "if you build it, he will come" while he walks through an Iowa cornfield. In Malta last Sunday afternoon, the tireless efforts of a group of Malta residents, countless donations of time and money by Phillips County businesses and folks combined with a beautiful donation by a Rock 'N Roll legend turned an empty field into a place of dreams as the city's skatepark officially opened. They built it, and he came. "The turn-out is...

They came from as far away as Paris, France and as from as close as down the block. Of the myriad of events held the first weekend in June, the All 1960's Malta High School Class Reunion was one of the most well attended event of a busy weekend. • Oh, the places it will go

    Parker Heinlein|Jun 29, 2016

The flat, fertile Ohio River valley where I grew up was a great place for growing soybeans and corn, but I always dreamed of wilder country. That’s why I bought the canoe. A 17-foot aluminum Grumman, it cost $239 at Beard’s Sporting Goods and came with a lifetime guarantee. I paid for it with money from my paper route. That first summer, with the canoe tied on top of my friend Johnny’s car, he and I and another buddy traveled to northern Minnesota where we launched the craft on Moose Lake, and d...

  • An 'honest vote' for protecting Public Land

Denise Juneau, Superintendent of Public Instruction|Jun 29, 2016

There is no greater beauty than the unspoiled view of Montana’s open spaces. From the high Beartooth peaks to the clean and clear Blackfoot River, our mountains, forests and streams stretch from one edge of the horizon to the other. Montana is home to the last best places on Earth. It’s what sets Big Sky country apart from anywhere else. But beyond their breathtaking beauty, Montana’s public lands are a source of recreation, and economic opportunity, as well as clean air and water. Public lands are where parents introduce their children to fi...

  • Is my road rage really warranted?

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jun 29, 2016
    1

I’ve driven on some of the most congested streets, highways and freeways in the western portion of the United States so I have had my fair share of “road rage.” I 405 through Fountain Valley in Orange County, Calif., bottlenecks and keeps cars hardly moving for 210 minutes, on average, each day and a study conducted by Caltrans says that four mile stretch of interstate causes a delay for motorists of about 530,300 hours per year. Traffic so deep it would have me cursing Mickey Mouse. But you don’t have to go to a huge city to drum up a case of...

  • End of an era

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jun 29, 2016

Last Wednesday I was shocked to the core when an era ended in Chicago. For those of you that haven’t heard, the Bulls got rid of hometown hero Derrick Rose, who they drafted with the first pick of 2008. Rose went on to win NBA Rookie of the Year in the 2008-09 season. He also be-came the first and only Chicago Bull since Michael Jordan to become the league’s Most Valuable Player in the 2010-11 season, while leading the Bulls to the first seed in the NBA playoffs. The following season Rose tor...
