    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jun 14, 2017

Nearly 500 people, mostly wearing Malta Blue, filed into the Malta High School Gymnasium last Wednesday to pay tribute to long-time educator and coach Glenn F. Flatt as he was laid to rest. Coach Flatt, 81, passed away on June 1 in Butte, Mont., five days after helping guide the M-ettes to a third-place finish at the State Class B Track and Field Meet in that city. Coach Flatt was born on October 30, 1935, to Francis and Bernice (Brown) Flatt and after graduating from Fort Benton High School...

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jun 14, 2017

The Malta City Fire Department was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Town Pump Charitable Foundation last week and the department couldn’t have been awarded the money at a better time. “This is from the same place as the grant that the County Fire Department was awarded,” City Fire Chief Greg Boos said. “We applied for it a little earlier than the County did so after a community member called me and told me about it.” Chief Boos and DeeDee Hanson from the Malta City Office filled out the needed paperwork, sent it off then sort of forgot about it...

  • Super surveillance cameras coming to MHS

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jun 14, 2017

Arguably, the highlight of last Wednesday night’s Malta School Board meeting was a presentation on surveillance cameras by the tech firm Avigilon Security Solutions that prompted responses from the audience of “wow” and “that’s incredible.” The presentation was conducted so Malta School Board Trustees could see the latest and greatest in surveillance equipment as the software and hardware currently at the high school is out of date. For nearly 45 minutes, Avigilon representatives showed the...

  • Blink of an eye

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jun 14, 2017

It all goes too fast. Just yesterday, it seems, I was bundling up to go fishing: hat, gloves, long johns, facemask. Snow was still falling. The wind was cold. The water made my hands ache. Now it’s hot and dry, the rivers are roaring, the reservoirs are on the rise. I’m still wearing a hat and face mask, but now it’s to protect myself from the sun, which seems to grow hotter each year. Maybe it’s simply my growing intolerance for the heat, but I’m already longing for the cooler days of fall....

  • Can't hardly wait for each new day to unfold

    Jun 14, 2017

Was nice to see Comey and his testimony - classic and professional. Of course Trump had to tweet and call him a lair. Typical elementary school ramblings as usual. Will be interesting when and if Trump keeps his promise to go before commission - if Trump claims more watched his interview than Comey. Will be hard to beat number that watched. Wonder what the cost of the helicopter ride and of those that were mandated to go along so Trump could go play golf this past weekend. Somebody need to remove the gas card from his tiny hands. Can hardly...

  • Halfway through 2017

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jun 14, 2017

A customer came in and noticed a Happy New Year sign at the PCN, reminding me that we are about halfway through 2017. This sign also reminded me of how a new year is typically stereotyped as a point of change. At this halfway point, I have noticed I haven’t done anything to change myself. I looked at the scale and I have never been heavier. I think most of us have had that moment where you look down at the scale and your eyes bulge through your head. I had that moment about a month ago. S...

  • Whitewater News for June 14, 2017

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Jun 14, 2017

Sympathy to the family of Glenn Flatt. Many went to the Car Show in Malta; congratulations to the winners. Pastor Steve Schumacher preached at Whitewater Lutheran Church Sunday and gave a good message. There will not be church service in Whitewater on June 18, but rather a joint Unity Service in Malta at 11 a.m. followed by a potluck lunch. (Malta serves the meat, the rest if potluck.) The neighbors mowed my lawn and I greatly appreciated that. Thanks for the plant from someone. There was a...

    Jun 14, 2017

Correction: In the May 31, 2017 story Asphalt argument and fee increases at city council meeting, it was reported that asphalt contractor Rocky Mummey had previously come to a Malta City Council Meeting to ask for assistance with Helena Sand and Gravel because he wasn’t being paid for the work he’d done in 2016. Mummey clarified to the PCN that he was paid for all work completed in 2016, but there was some overages still in dispute that he hadn’t been paid for. Mark Hebert, PCN Correspondent|Jun 14, 2017

1 years ago June 11, 1917 It rained hard, the Enterprise reported. A copious amount of showers fell that promised to relieve a critical situation and lack of moisture. Along with the rain, news was of a terrific tornado that struck from Glasgow east to Poplar, leveling many small buildings, killing five persons and injuring 30. ☼ ☼ ☼ Local law got back two criminals who broke out of jail sometime before. The opening Phillips County Saddle Club Boots and Saddles Rodeo was moved to the Milk River Pavilion on Saturday, June 10 but that didn't stop 12-year-old Arena Niebur from riding in her first rodeo. Niebur participated in several events including the Barrel, Arena and Key Races. She thought that things were going pretty good that day despite a couple of hiccups by her horse, Straight to the Bar (Straight), a 24-year-old Quarter Horse.
