We encourage preschoolers, through coming high school seniors; to sign up and earn an award for every five hours of reading up to 40 hours. Sign up has begun to help avoid the "summer slump." It is with great appreciation that the library thanks its sponsors who make the summer reading program such a success. The library has a selection of various items for all the readers who make the first five hours of reading...

  • Holy Spurge…where did that come from?

    Marko Manoukian, P.C. Extension Agent|Jun 13, 2018

Several people have asked me why Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia esula) has made such a big comeback from their efforts to manage the noxious weed. Their concern is justified looking at the amount of spurge that is in the Milk River drainage, from the Phillips County line to Havre. While this is not a strictly “scientific” explanation, this increase could be simply that leafy spurge has a deep taproot (about 20 feet). In dry years, like 2018 and like this spring, deep-rooted plants do better than sha...

  • A fondness for snakes

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Jun 13, 2018

While out walking the dogs last week at the lake I encountered a trio of young folks shore fishing and asked if they were having any luck. “We only caught a couple of hammer handles,” one of the women told me, “but we killed a big bull snake.” “Why?” I asked. “Because they eat goose eggs,” she replied. I’ve heard a lot of excuses for killing bull snakes, but that was a new one. It always bothers me to hear of people killing nonvenomous snakes, especially those that prey on rodents, and have...

  • Get that bird!

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jun 13, 2018

If I was a bird hunter, I would already have the perfect dog. My three-year-old Cocker Spaniel Bruce has always hated birds. At times he can be seen or heard barking at grackles that nest in a tree in our backyard. I myself have had my beef with the green-headed nuisance birds. They tend to take over the bird-feeders that I put out for the finches every year. I rid our feeders of grackles by using only thistle seeds last year. But as soon as I tried the variety seeds, I learned they come right...

  • So much for that beard

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jun 13, 2018

That didn’t last long. It was only three weeks ago that I was bragging about my yeard (a beard grown for a year) and now, here I am, my face smooth as a baby’s butt (but not as fresh smelling.) The response from people has come in three: Couldn’t care less; Hate that I no longer have the yeard, or; “That thing made you look like a flabby Viking with an iron deficiency.” At the end of the day, I got tired of grooming the darn thing every morning. You couldn’t tell by looking at me when I had it, but I spent a good 20-minutes each morning blo...
