Julia Tatafu and Natalie Judd are once again leading a group of dedicated lifeguards with Jillian O'Brien as Head Lifeguard, second-year-guard Kayla Judd back in action as well as first-year-guards Reese Sjostrom, Nikki Nicholson, Danie Rhodes, and Zac Judd filling out the crew. The pool opened last week and will stay o...
What was at one-point common sense seems to have been lost on people and Phillips County Justice of the Peace Gayle Stahl thinks it is high time for a reminder: when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle on the highway, slow down and keep emergency personnel’s safety in mind when passing. “In the last two weeks, we have got 50 citations written, Judge Stahl said. “People are in a hurry to get everyplace, and the law is on the books, but we have had so many people injured recently that the (Montana) Highway Patrol has started writing ticke...
Travis Rhoads with Montarctica Productions is back at it again with another hilarious Stand-up comedy event Wednesday, June 19th, this time at the Tin Cup Bar and Grill. Headlining this show is Billings native Conner Roma and LA-based comic Jimmy Shin. Some of you may know Conner as he has performed in Malta during the Christmas Comedy special and once before that at the Villa Theater, during both shows he only gave Malta a small snippet of his stand up routine performing only around 10 minutes as a support act. Always coming away as a crowd...
Rep. Greg Gianforte, R-Mont., told the St. Mary Rehabilitation Working Group Wednesday in Havre that he will work to rehabilitate the system that provides much of the water in the Milk River each year. "I've got my marching orders," he said. "... You have my commitment." It's been 17 years since the St. Mary's Rehabilitation Working Group was established to find a workable solution to repairing the St. Mary Diversion. "There's no infrastructure project more important than the St. Mary's project, it's at the top of our list," Gianforte said. The...
As residents may be seeing, some trees are just now leafing out. However, others may have died over the winter. It appears the cold temperatures in February has killed some trees or tree limbs. The cold temperatures in March are responsible for the late leafing of trees. Buds were frozen in March causing late leaf out. People may want to take their time in deciding to trim or remove a tree. Give them a little extra time to recover. Also, if you break a branch off and it snaps, it is dead....

The summers of 2017 and 2018 have been rough growing seasons for Montana’s farmers and ranchers. Extreme drought, extended heat, and wildfires brought very challenging conditions to Montana, including the Johnson’s Ranch in Hinsdale. Matt and Sonja Johnson will share how they faced the drought and heat as it impacted both their organic and conventional crops, their soil health, weeds and finances. The Johnson’s grow naked oats, plow-down/grazing/production field peas, barley inter-seeded with yellow sweet clover, and wheat. Matt and Sonja...
I was going to write about how I purchased my first pair of Jordan brand shoes at age 31, but I have a more important story. PJ started tee-ball! It is his first time playing in a real baseball game. I also have to shout out Malta Parks and Recreation for their kickball league (PJ’s first team experience.) I know we may technically have one foot out of the door (nothing is guaranteed), but one of the things that Susan and I appreciate about Malta is that in the last few years extracurricular s...

Mabel Caroline Hockett was born in Loring, Mont., on December 22, 1932 to parents Andrew and Bertha Flansaas, who emigrated from Norway. Mabel was a sophomore when the Loring High School closed. Rather than board in Malta, the family decided to send Mabel to the east coast to live with her sister Anna (Ed) Berdahl, where she helped take care of Anna's children. Mabel made the trip by train from Malta, Montana to Philadelphia by herself at the age of 13. During the two years Mabel stayed with Ann...
The 100 Club, starting its third year raising funds for an endowment, has received a gift of $15,000 to honor the memory of Emma Jean Bridges. Jean moved to Malta and lived at Hi-Line Retirement Center (HLRC) from June of 2016 until she passed away in January of this year. In the words of one of her great-nieces, "she was unique, sassy, feisty and wasn't afraid to say exactly what she thought. She also cared about each of us immensely." Jean moved to San Francisco in 1943 from her hometown of Ge...

Lots of baby gophers around now! The grass is growing tall enough it is harder to spot the little buggers! We had a small shower of rain on Thursday. We will be praying for more since the crops look good but if no rain comes the grain won't form in the head! The paleontologists grilled up some supper and invited me to come over last Sunday! Eating with people beats eating alone! Saturday a group of residents from the Sweet Retirement Center in Chinook made a trip to the Great Plains Dinosaur...
The weather has stayed so strange----it is often very cold in the morning and then very hot during the afternoon. They have changed their forecast and we are now to be having no rain and it is beginning to be very dry. They are to start work on the new well house so we have been warned we may be without water for unknown times this week. We have lost several people who have been associated with the community over the years recently. Condolences are sent to the family, etc. of Mark Newby. Mark...
This week I’ve been thinking about sheep wagons as once again the tourist season is in full swing and we daily open the sheep wagons for all to see. Sheep wagons were home to many men and even families during the summer months. A herder would keep the sheep in fresh water and grass by moving them a bit each day. The sheep wagon was very practical and efficient. A very small space provided shelter, heat, storage, food, bed, grain for horses, and a table for eating. Most sheep wagons had a “Dutch door”. This consisted of a top half that could...

Recently Post 57 supported the local baseball team by paying over $500 to cover their insurance / entry fee into the regional American Legion Baseball League. Along with 40 to 60 other spectators at Trafton Park, I really enjoyed their play on June 6th's double-header against Wolf Point. They won the 7 inning first game by 13-10 and were leading 5-1 in the second game when it was rained out. The players occasionally swap positions as several of them are pitchers, and the rules apparently limit...

The Malta swim team almost tripled in size, as the team brought eight swimmers to the Chinook meet in Saturday, June 8, through Sunday, June 9. Huffman had an unofficial time of 46.98 in the 50-Butterfly. He entered the event with a time of 49.16. Despite only having two practices in the pool this season, fourteen-year-o...

The Milk River Baseball and T-Ball Season have reached the mid-point of the season and the co-ed league saw the Red and Yellow ages seven through nine teams square off last Wednesday, June 5. The game served as a learning event as every team batted through their lineup in every inning, unless three outs were called. After the game, the PCN caught up with Shaun Bleth, coach of the Yellow team. "We are trying to teach them the rules of the game because a lot of kids just don't know the rules of...
