  • First State Bank Car Show draws hundreds to Malta

    Mark Hebert|Jun 11, 2014

The streets of Malta looked similar to the set of the movie American Graffiti on Saturday as almost 100 entrants came to the 11th Annual First State Bank Car Show this past Saturday. From the low and slow look of such American classics as Chevy's mid 50's Bel Air to the high-octane, street pounding roar of the IHRA dragsters, there was something for everyone. All told there were nearly 90 cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors at this year's show and event planner Terry Skones said she was...

  • Two Malta Graduates of 2003 became U.S. Air Force Captains on same day

    Mark Hebert|Jun 11, 2014

Malta's Katie Weber became Captain Katie Weber of the United States Air Force in late May and the former M-ette was pleasantly surprised to see many more members of her family there than she had expected. "At first I just thought it was going to be my Mom and be a low-key deal," she said. "But then a few of my family members came out. I always tell them about what I do in the Air Force, but it was cool to have them come out and actually see what I do. It meant the world to me to have them...

  • Rubber Ducky Race meanders down canal

    Mark Hebert|Jun 11, 2014

On Sunday, the races at the Hi Line Drag Strip thundered through the day, cars reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, but on Saturday, another, somewhat slower race took place in the irrigation canal in Malta as the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum held its annual Duck Race. Over 500 ducks took a nearly 45 minute float on the day, starting near the high school and ending at the Short Oil Bridge near Malta Ready Mix. About 100 people dotted the banks of the irrigation canal awaiting the small,...

  • Hunt seagulls instead of sage grouse? Just a thought

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jun 11, 2014

My friend E Dub called last week. He wondered if his out-of-state bird license would be cheaper this year if he can’t hunt sage grouse. I told him I doubted it. Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks isn’t known for lowering prices despite diminishing opportunities. Elk licenses didn’t get any cheaper after the wolves ate all the elk. FWP did, however, eventually add wolves to the list of hunt-able species. Maybe that’s the best we can hope for, I told him, another bird to hunt. Then I...

  • Unpacking tales of the Rhubarb Rube

    Mark Hebert|Jun 11, 2014

The past 72-hours of my life have been a whirlwind of box-lugging, back –breaking bliss. On Friday afternoon my family and I finally closed on our new house here in Malta and many people have asked me “are you all moved in?” The answer is yes, for the most part, we are all technically moved in. There is a huge difference, however, between physically having all our stuff moved into our home verses having everything unpacked. Over the last three days my wife, daughter and myself have spent hour after hour cutting packing tape, emptying cardboard...

    Jun 11, 2014

If you are a resident or a property owner in Dodson, this is to inform you that you must keep your property mowed or make arrangements for someone else to mow it. If the Town has to mow your property, there will be a charge of $40.00 per lot. The Town Council feels that everyone deserves to see the town looking its best and it will take the cooperation of everyone to obtain that goal. Some lots are large enough to hay and if that is what you plan to do, please let the town know in advance. If you wish to have the Town mow and are willing to...

  • Christmas Social to replace Festival of Trees

    Jun 11, 2014

It is a true story that the Festival of Trees will no longer be held at the Phillips County Museum. The good news is, the Phillips County Historical Society is hosting a “Christmas Social” to be held December 4, 2014, at the P.C. Museum! The Christmas Social will be similar to the past Tree Festivals in that it will continue to offer decorating competitions, silent and live auctions, entertainment and scrumptious refreshments. However, the large tree decorating competition has been eliminated. In lieu of the large tree entries, the Phillips Cou...

  • CollectM Antiques now open in Malta

    Pierre Bibbs|Jun 11, 2014

According to Forbes' Top 10 Consumer Complaints, retail is listed at number four for "False advertising and other deceptive practices, defective merchandise, problems with rebates, coupons, gift cards and gift certificates, failure to deliver." One of the main things is defective merchandise. More often than not, these items are not assembled here, but in countries abroad. Which is probably why antiquing has hit America by storm. "I try to keep things out of the dumps because this stuff has a...

  • Tribute to my father

    Pierre Bibbs|Jun 11, 2014

One thing I’m happy to say about Phillips County is that it values family. I don’t care what they say, a child needs a good mother, but even more than that they need a good father. A father, in a perfect world provides stability, protection and a loving household. The last few decades many men that have had children have fallen short of the title “father.” The father is a person who sets a tone. He leaves a legacy. He loves his wife fiercely and would give anything to see his family thrive....

  • Phillips County Motorsports: Hi-Line Dragstrip sees first action; Jeff Nelson breaks Alcohol class track record

    Pierre Bibbs|Jun 11, 2014

The Hi-Line Dragstrip saw it's first action of the season last Saturday, as many local and not so local racers brought everything from rat-rods to family sedans to the Phillips County Motorsports Dragraces. The art of the race isn't only to see how fast your vehicle can go, but to see how accurately you know your vehicle and ability to operate it in a straight race. The winners of the races were chosen by how accurately the owner can guess how they would finish. Winner of the alcohol class was...
