I see the eastern and western kingbirds are back! Now I’m waiting to spot the Larkbunting. I heard from a birder friend from Galveston and he said the migration is later than usual. He brings tour birders up to Montana to observe the birds in this area. If you want a great entertaining afternoon or evening, you can miss with the Fort Pec...

After a long day on the trail a spot would be found to hold the herd for the night. It would have both water and grass available. The cattle would be watered and allowed to graze. Then with basic needs met the cattle were ready to lie quiet and chew their cuds. It was nearing twilight and soon to be dark. This period was called the “cocktail guard”. It was a time of rest...

  • Opinion on gun violence in schools

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jun 8, 2022

There is a common denominator in school shootings: America’s rifle, the AR-15. Built to throw a lot of lead, this mass-produced, cheaply made weapon was designed for the military, but has been embraced by every nut-case with a grudge since they became legal. Not a sporting arm in any way, the AR-15 and its knockoffs are weapons of war and video games. For a short time Remington marketed its entry into the assault weapon field as a “coyote getter,” but even the NRA knew that was a stretch. It was...
