Nearly 40 people attended the Malta Area Chamber of Commerce's monthly meeting last Tuesday at Westside Café, many turning out to hear candidates running for a Phillips County Commissioner, Montana House District 33 and Montana Senate District 17. Chamber of Commerce President Travis Rhoads and Executive Dina Meneely hosted the informal gathering and spent just over an hour asking questions that the various candidates fielded and answered. The Phillips County Commissioner position voters will be asked to decide on following long-time... Full story
The Malta High School gymnasium was nearly packed last Sunday afternoon as the school presented thirty-seven Malta High School seniors with their high school diplomas. "I'm impressed with this senior class," Principal Scott King said in his opening remarks. "Several of them wrote in their senior farewells how grateful they are to live in our community. They recognized that their many accomplishments and successes happened because of the support they received at home and through our community and...
Of the four graduating seniors at Saco High School on Saturday in the school's auditorium, Channing Mavencamp was the lone student to attend school in town for his entire 12-year academic career, but that fact didn't take away from the joy that group felt during their big day. Joining Mavencamp on the stage on Saturday were graduating seniors Cyra Mears, Alyssa Ostrom and Dakota Rickel. Saco's graduating Class of 2016 was welcomed to the stage by nearly 200 people in the audience and the process...
An old milk truck is the centerpiece of Saco artist Todd Mandeville's latest painting. Wildflowers billow through the vehicle's rusted hood, poke through the wheel wells and surround the truck which sits in a grassy prairie, much like the ones found throughout Phillips County. The painting is, for now, titled Got Flowers? (a play on the Got Milk? ad campaign.) "That was the name I was thinking of when I was painting it," Mandeville said. "Sometimes the names come to me right away, and that's... Full story

Most of the problems I have with my boats occur when I’m not aboard. At the helm, running through big waves or rocky shoals, I’ve always managed to keep the boats afloat. Left to their own devices, however, tied to the dock or pulled out on shore, my craft often end up in peril. During last week’s deluge my wife suggested we drive over to the lake to check on our pontoon boat. I wasn’t worried. Pontoon boats are hard to sink, and I had tied ours securely to the dock. The pontoon was still t...
I wish Dad had caught me swiping his pistol; he didn’t. It was a beauty, a Military High-Standard .22 caliber. All I wanted to do was “borrow” it so that I could enjoy slaughtering rats with a bunch of other gun-loving students at the garbage dump located several miles from the small town that was home to the university we attended. We’d meet late in the day, about the time the rats began their nightly forays among the putrefying flotsam, and hide behind a clump of bushes within pistol range of our victims, the population of which could only be...
Let me start off first by saying I love my momma. I always have and always will. I have heard from one or more people that I am a momma’s boy. There was a time I didn’t see it, until I did. It was around my birthday in 2010. I was living in Florida at the time with a band of Australians. My mother, father and brothers were living in Bolingbrook, IL at the time after living in New Jersey for the previous four years. My mother and father were originally going to go on a cruise to Nassau in the...

Museum doors are open Monday through Saturday 10-5....

1 years ago May 25, 1916 It rained For some time past reports have been coming in of rains all around Malta, but it was not until yesterday forenoon that the welcome drops began falling in the city. And it rained all day, not a few scattering drops, but a steady downpour that commenced about 10 a.m. and continued into the night. It was most needed to assist the growing crops. This dispels all thought of a dry year and the dry lands farmers in the country tributary to Malta are about to be the...
