Koss and Tatafu edged out Ost (376) and Clifford Merriman (333) for the two vacant seats. Malta School District has a total of 2,073 registered voters (1,079 absentee) and about 40-percent of those registered voted in last Tuesday's election. In Saco, levies for bot...

David Veseth is a man of many hobbies. Give him a number, 1 through 56, and he can tell you which county in Montana the number represents on license plates. Give him a cool, dry morning and he will spend it biking from his home on Central Ave to the City Landfill and back. One of the hobbies David has added to his repertoire of late is that of collecting recipes. From 4B’s Classic Tomato Soup to Egg Nog Pie and from Skittle-Marshmallow Yams to Play Dough, David has spent time over the last s...

  • A four dog family

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|May 10, 2017

I had it all figured out. We’d get a new puppy every four years. That way as one dog neared the end of the trail another would be reaching its prime and a puppy would bring up the rear. But Barb and I didn’t want four dogs. That would be too many. On occasion, we even talked in hushed tones about how easy life would be with only a couple of dogs or even one. My plan was based on the 12-year life expectancy of springer spaniels. Then Spot refused to die and Barb became impatient. Not at the old d...

  • Fondly remembering chickens in town

    May 10, 2017

Dear editor, Seeing chickens on the front page of the PCN truly made me sit up and take notice! Chickens have played a big part in my life, both in the little city of Malta and also on our farm/ranch north of Saco. Let’s go back in time, to the Depression year, 1937. My widowed mother ordered baby chicks enabling our family of four children to shortly have fresh eggs and often fried chicken. This was in city limits of Malta. My brothers put up a high fence for a practical enclosure. Naturally, there was a coop, with needed nests. Next door t...

  • Give the kid a chance

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|May 10, 2017

Man is it tough to be a Bears fan. For those that missed it, in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Bears originally had the third pick of the draft. With so much talent of defense and our lack of forced turnovers last season, I and many other Bears fans expected our GM to draft the draft’s top safety or cornerback. While watching the draft, I waited patiently expecting the 49ers to draft Stanford’s Solomon Thomas with the second overall pick. Then it happened. The Bears traded from the...

  • Failed legislation leaves Colstrip's future largely up in the air

Zachariah Bryan, Community News Service University of Montana School of Journalism|May 10, 2017

When Montana's 2017 Legislature adjourned on April 28, Sen. Duane Ankney, R-Colstrip, ended almost right where he began. At the session's beginning, he helped draw up several bills that would help his community, which is facing the impending closure of two out of four units at its massive coal-fired electrical plant. By the time lawmakers left the Capitol, many of the bills – aimed at easing impacts on jobs, tax revenues and real estate – were dead. “The Legislature had opportunities to intervene in this policy conversation and they chose not t...
