The location of the mural will be on the North facing side of Art's Furniture and Carpet and able to be viewed by residents and visitors entering Malta from many directions. "I am so excited," said Julie Snellman who owns Art's...

    Mark Hebert|May 9, 2018

Stepping into Studio Stiles in Malta is almost like stepping outside Phillips County and into a fancy, metropolitan beauty salon ... just the way the owner planned it. "That has been a lot of people's reaction when they first see it," Tia Love, who owns the new beauty salon and downstairs gym, said. "That is what I was going for and that is why I love it. I am super-proud of how it all turned out." Stiles talked with the PCN last Tuesday in Malta as she put some of the finishing touches on the...

  • Mayor tells Council 'good news' of 'no rate increases'

    Mark Hebert|May 9, 2018

The traditional Tuesday night Malta City Council Meeting was shifted to Friday at noon last week and an announcement from Malta Mayor John Demarais informed everyone of a bit of good news to start their weekends. “We have some big news about the water project,” Mayor Demarais said. “There is good news and bad news. The bad news is we have to have a public hearing. The good news is, it is not a public hearing about (water) rate increases, because the rates are not going to go up one single nickel.” In January of this year, the Malta City Co...

International News: Sympathy to the refugees on the Mexican border (many women and children.) There should be some way to help them? My cousin, Ray Austin, lives in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Hello to him. Locally, spring and school activities are here. The Whitewater School Carnival was a success…for me too. I played Bingo and won a waffle iron! It works well and has a snowflake on each waffle. It is from the movie Frozen (fun!) Miriam Sanguins attended a drivers training instruction class. S...

  • A little under the weather

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|May 9, 2018

A few nights ago I fell asleep to the sound of rain on the roof. At least I think I did. It’s become such a rare occurrence that I can’t be sure. Maybe it was a dream. I remember rain hammering on the roof a few years back, but it didn’t happen last summer. Once the snow disappeared in April, the country simply dried out. There was no green-up, no wet season, no rain. I worry this spring is shaping up in similar fashion. So maybe I was hearing things. But the sound of rain, like the sound of a...

  • Fight the land grab; write to the BLM

    May 9, 2018

Dear Editor, The extreme environmentalists came with many different names but they all have one plan in sight and that is to make an International Park, extending from the Canadian Grass Land Park, which is just across the boarder at Frenchmen Creek, to Mexico! We already have 38 million acres in National Parks in the United States, do we need more? People do not live in a park! We all have to fight this land grab. Write to BLM Field Office, 47285, Malta Filed Office. These conglomerates have lots of money and are very patient. Believe me,...

  • Loving the baby photos in birth announcements

    May 9, 2018

Dear Editor, The sweet photos besides the write-ups of newborns are such a joy and delight to view! A baby brings so many blessings, so many stories and so many joys; my parenting experience proves it. There are so many things to be thankful for, and a baby surely is one of the best. In my lifetime I’ve had five women all unsmiling say “I wish I had more children!” If only they had seriously considered God’s plan for chastity, love, marriage, and family. Luke 18:16-17 tells us Jesus said to let the little children come to Me. Do not shut th...

  • I am human after all

    May 9, 2018

Well. It happened. It was a couple of months ago but it happened. I did something that my mother and father did to my brothers and me when I was younger but what I did was so much worse. Around the sixth month of Susan’s pregnancy, we came up with the name Lincoln. It was a name we had been sitting on for a couple of years. Little did I know that I would be working alongside a pup named Langston at the PCN. So naturally, when rubbing Susan’s baby-belly I said to my then unborn son,” How are you doing Langston?” Oh no. Susan let me have it and...

Prehistoric Molar Found Near Malta in 1941 – “A molar belonging either to Paul Bunyan or some pre-historic monster” reads the PCN story. WPA crews had been working at the gravel pit three miles northeast of Malta when an extraordinary discovery was made. Working with picks, the work crew broke the object nearly in half before the workers recognized it as something extraordinary. The tooth was found in a 40-foot cut of the hill sandwiched between a layer of gumbo clay and gravel. The tooth is nearly a foot in length and eight inches in width...

  • Loring News for May 9, 2018

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|May 9, 2018

I'm pretty sure that spring is here, at least, for the moment. The temps are in the 70's, the sun is out, not much wind, birds are twittering, ducks and geese are swimming and honking...yes, I think spring is sprung! My brother Scott flew up from Arizona to visit and get a farm fix! We drove to Whitewater on Friday so he could see my classroom before I retire. I showed him the stained glass windows at the church because he does some stained glass. He really liked them. Then Lu Besel suggested a...
