Larry Putnam is no stranger to taking a position as an Interim CEO of a hospital and took on that position at the Phillips County Hospital and Family Health Clinic in Malta following the departure of Ward VanWichen last February. What is new for Putnam at his latest Interim CEO spot in Malta is, as many of you well know, he has held the CEO position in Phillips County before. That said, Putnam told the PCN he is happy to be back in Phillips County, but by no means wants or can have the job full...

4-29. How is everyone surviving the COVID-19 virus? OK, I hope. Whitewater residents, like most people, are abiding by the rules. The school is still closed, and we have not had church services. The North 40 is still serving senior meals, but they are takeout only. Many thanks to the “secret surprise” donor who anonymously gave me a new water heater. Dan and Scott from Farmers and Ranchers are installing it for me. Thanks to them. It is a blessing to have water and now hot water. Now I don’t hav...
May 2020, time continues to march along! Even in this time of pandemic when many people are worried about one thing or another, nature’s cycles continue. The moon is almost full again, with Venus sparkling in the evening sky! The sun comes up further north every day and sets later and later! I relish this time of year as the temps rise, grass greens up and the songbirds return! Tina and Charles Russell stopped by one evening to gaze at the stars while social distancing! It was good to see people. The Big Dipper is pretty much straight up. I hav...

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I’ve seen countless before and after photos recently of clean skies over cities -- like Los Angeles -- that used to be noted for their smog. Folks have been driving a lot less following more than a month of stay at home orders and the air is undoubtedly cleaner. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with water, specifically the West Gallatin River, into which drain the toilets of Big Sky. The water and sewer district there faces a potential law...
I definitely understand the reasoning because there is a lot at stake, but I am bummed that the spring sports season is canceled. While revisiting the history of Phillips County Sports has been fun, I miss seeing kids compete in sports. When I was a senior in high school, I chose to graduate early and miss out on my spring courses intentionally, but I really feel for the seniors of 2019-20 who were not given the option to complete a traditional senior year. Those kids won’t know what it’s lik...

This week, American Prairie Reserve is donating more than 4,000 pounds of bison meat to Montana Food Bank Network. The donation, equivalent to more than 12,000 servings, will help families fight hunger across Montana. With food supply chains shutting down across the country because of coronavirus, meat prices have begun to climb at local grocery stores, if it is even available on the shelves. This is a difficult situation for individuals and families who were already on the brink of food insecurity and/or have experienced a recent layoff....
