When told about the excitement the folks of Phillips County have echoed upon the band's appearance this year at the fair, Casey Donahew gave a short preview of what those in attendance at their show on that Friday could look forward to. "Other than the greatest time they have ever had?" asked...
Melissa Heppner is more than happy that she recently won the Billings Clinic Friends of Nursing Outstanding Nurse Award, even if she thinks someone else should have won it. "I don't think I deserve it," she said on Saturday, "but it is a great honor." Heppner, a 2008 graduate of Malta High School and the daughter of Steven and Joan Heppner, won the award in May after two of her colleagues -- CeCe Castro and Sara Anguiano – nominated her for the award. A group of preschool aged children converged on the Little Splatters performing arts class in Malta last Thursday to role play, tell stories and prepare for a show that they will perform at a special event in the coming future. "We are walking them through the basics of roleplaying," Kathy Bagley, proprietor of the ArtSpot and instructor of the Little Splatters, said prior to the day's class. "We started out last week by showing them pictures of the farm. As they are coming in and getting...
It’s summertime and the roads are filled with brave cyclists battling disease. The calls and the letters begin arriving every June. So-and-so from someplace far away will be bicycling through your town this summer as part of his/her effort to combat a disease of their choice. The cyclists always make themselves available to the local newspaper and eager young reporters jump at the chance to write up a compelling story. If not, they’re given the assignment anyway by city editors anxious to fil...
Over the years, much has been made about the differences between ranchers and wildlife conservationists. Yet there’s plenty of common ground—and in Montana we’re literally standing on millions of acres of it. When it comes to our shared values, we all care about the land. Some people value grasslands because of its diverse wildlife; others manage the land to provide for livestock. In fact, when grazers are managed well, native grasslands are sustained and offer both. The grasses of the Great Plains evolved to support and be maintained by graze...
My fellow columnist, Parker Heinlein – four columns to the left of me – brings up some wonderful points this week. Take a few minutes, if you haven’t already, to read his column before proceeding through mine. Done? Thanks. Parker isn’t just whistling Dixie when he says that bicycle groups racing through a nearby town is a must-write for the rube journalist (and he had no intention of offending you by whistling Dixie.) Every summer, without fail, at least one group will peddle through town during a noble pursuit to raise money or awarene...
After a long hard bought with Amoxicillin, I had a good week. After feeling super miserable for a week, I found joy in the little things life brings. My first simple thing was my yard. Because of my inability to mow the lawn, the grass has gotten taller, which is great for these hot summer days. Everything is greening up and with less water! My other victory came last week when Julio Salveson helped me remove a woodworking bench from my shop area. Many older guys are probably thinking why in...
