On March 31, 2021, Gail Cummings retired from the United States Postal service where she had been a mail carrier for 42 years. She had been through five different Post Masters, a lot of vehicles, and a lot of miles. She has a couple of million mile plaques to prove that. She started carrying the mail in 1979. She didn't have a contract at that time, but things were a little different back then. She got into the mail carrying business after her father-in-law had been carrying it since 1954. She...
April is always a fast-paced month at the legislature, and this year is no different. The Senate has been busy voting on a lot of bills that covered a wide variety of topics. I am confident that the bills we passed will improve the lives of Montanans in many ways, however, nothing is perfect. This past week the Senate passed two critical appropriations bills that will help our state move past the pandemic and sustain prosperity for decades to come. As we decided what to do with the federal stimulus money, Republican leaders in Helena, unlike Wa...

Two of the priority bills requested by Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen, Senate Bill 169 (requiring voter ID) and House Bill 176 (a deadline for voter registration), were signed into law by Gov. Greg Gianforte on Monday. “Montana sets the standard for elections across the country, however, there is always room for improvement, and voter ID and voter registration deadlines are best practices in protecting the integrity of elections,” said Secretary Jacobsen. Sen. Mike Cuffe (R, SD-1) sponsored SB 169, and echoed Secretary Jacobsen’s views...

Much has been written about cowboys and their horses, but this story is about a sheepherder and his dog. (The only dog to have been arrested in Malta). Now a sheepherder was lonely and sometimes a bit loony. His only concern was his sheep. He fought coyotes, mosquitos, loco week, lack of good food, and loneliness. His only friend and companion was his loyal dog! One of these men decided to take a week off before lambing started. He arrived in Malta with his bedroll and his dog. Checking into a hotel, he proceeded to get cleaned up. Then...
We've had a few days of spring snow which was very welcome since we are very dry up here. I've spotted some mourning doves, killdeer, and juncos. I'm sure the warblers and finches will be coming in May. I went over to Whitewater on Friday to visit with Connie Blake and meet her son Barrett before they were headed back to Tennessee. I stopped to see Bonnie McMullen and wish her a happy birthday. Then stopped at Lu Besel’s for lunch before going in to the museum to work on the inventory. Lu B...

I’ve always liked a room with a view, and I’ve had a few. The view out the front window of the apartment Barb and I rented on Willson Avenue in Bozeman always reminded me of a Courier & Ives print, especially in winter. The four-plex we lived in, however, was torn down a few years ago. Apparently, it didn’t fit the aesthetic of the neighborhood. The view out of our front window in Malta is somewhat similar. The prettiest house in town sits across the street surrounded by towering trees. The best...
