  • Chickens, constructions and more at Council meeting

    Mark Hebert|Apr 19, 2017

During the Public Comment portion of last Tuesday's Malta City Council meeting, Malta Mayor Shyla Jones explained why a recent request to allow City residents to keep chickens in City limits was not put on the night's agenda and why the measure wouldn't be approved. Mayor Jones said that same request had been made to the City of Malta in the past and was denied then for a couple of reasons. The person asking for the change in policy to allow up to 4-to-6 hens (no roosters) to be kept in backyards, in covered pens, and pointed to large cities in...

  • Barber Pole spinning again in Malta

    Apr 19, 2017

For the past 40 years, when men around Phillips County have needed to have their 'ears lowered,' Jerry Salveson has been there, scissors in hand, so when Salveson went down with an injury which sidelined him for three months, the county started looking a lot shaggier. The small open sign that generally swings beneath the bigger Jerry's Barber Pole sign (and similar sized Tow Ropes sign ) hadn't been seen on Central Avenue in Malta for three months as Salveson dealt with a bulging disc in his...

  • Legislative roundup

Michael Siebert, Community News Service UM School of Journalism|Apr 19, 2017

HELENA -- A legislative committee has tabled a lawmaker’s attempt to clarify how private land is leased to oil companies. Speaker of the House Austin Knudsen, R-Culbertson, is the sponsor of House Bill 384, which would have revised language used on oil and gas leases to inform landowners of the associated costs of oil extraction from their land. Knudsen said leases tell landowners they will receive royalties from wells on their land. However, he said the oil industry tends to deduct transportation and operating costs from that royalty. That i...

  • Lost and found in Switzerland

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Apr 19, 2017

I’ve always trusted my sense of direction. Oh, I argue with it on occasion, but it usually gets me where I’m going and back again. On a recent trip to Europe with my wife, however, I feared I’d finally lost my bearings. Too many strasses, I think, simply stressed me out. It was our second day in Lucerne, Switzerland, a beautiful city on a lake surrounded by the snow-covered Swiss Alps. I’d taken a walk the day we arrived and felt comfortable navigating the city of 81,000. After all, a promine...

  • 'Cooking Can be Murder' ...and hilarious

    Apr 19, 2017

Dear Editor, It was a dark stormy night, under a clear and starlit sky. I was tired of being tossed around in the salad bowl of life, so I hopped into my little blue car and buzzed over to the Malta High School, where folks were gathering to witness a culminary arts contest. It seemed that the judge for this cooking contest (Mr. James Casanova) was downright arrogant, malicious, and maniacally rude to the contestants. And last, but not yeast, he delighted in humidifying every single person with whom he came into contact! So it was not...

  • Cleaning up 'my' mess

    Pierre Bibbs|Apr 19, 2017

My dog Brucey gave me a friendly reminder of why I need to clean up after myself. Last week, my wife bought me an early Father’s Day gift that was two years in the making. It’s no secret that I love smoking meat, so many of you already know what it is. Last year, I was supposed to get a new grill but scared of the price of that grill, I picked up a second hand grill for a fraction of the cost. That grill has served my family really well over the past year and has accumulated countless hours of u...

The months of March and April signal SBAC (Smarter Balanced) time! Time for state testing for students throughout the state of Montana. In Dodson, we’ll try to keep in perspective that SBAC results are one of many ways to accurately assess student competency and skill levels in science, math, reading/writing, etc. Although…..those of us in education understand that the results of this particular assessment does have a more diverse widespread influence on schools at the “end of the day.” In Dodson we have prepared aggressively for SBAC since S...

  • Counseling Corner for April 19, 2017

    Apr 19, 2017

Warmer temperatures, longer days... all sure signs it’s time for students to face a barrage of testing. From end-of-year subject exams to standardized national tests, there’s more than enough to challenge the average student. Unfortunately, for some students, any testing presents a significantly stressful situation. It’s called “test anxiety.” Students who haven’t studied or who never grasped the subject matter understandably have reason to feel nervous about tests, but that’s not the same as test anxiety. Some nervousness when facing any te...

1 years ago April 12, 1917 Edwards and McLellan added their bit to the Malta building boom by announcing the construction of the building which now adorns Front Street and Fifth Avenue. ♫ ♫ ♫ Out on the Missouri River Country, Charlie Stewart was engaged to help feed out a bunch of cattle owned by a prominent rancher.
