  • A reason for the freezin'

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jan 25, 2017

While most people joked, laughed and stayed warm while standing atop the frozen water of Nelson Reservoir on Saturday, another group of folks were perhaps a little apprehensive, if not just as jovial, as they were about to become very wet and very cold in the very near future. "As far as I know, this is the first Polar Plunge in Phillips County," said Jerry Benge as he helped contestants enter the event. "Polar Plunges have been taking off all over the state in bigger cities and so we figured...

  • Chase Kaufman enjoying time at PCHC

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Jan 25, 2017

5 Chase Kaufman is currently on a clinical rotation at the Phillips County Hospital and Family Health Clinic and though he was born and raised here, he has spent plenty of time in the area. Kaufman is originally from Billings, but has local ties to Phillips County as his father, Vance, grew up in Malta. Vance now lives in Billings with his wife, Chase's mother, Estela, and the medical profession – like Phillips County – run deep in the family. "Mom's a nurse and Dad's a physical the...

  • Legislative round up:

Michael Siebert, Community News Service UM School of Journalism|Jan 25, 2017

The Montana Legislature debated two bills last week that would give patients more of an active role in determining the cost of their health care. Senate Bill 100, introduced by Sen. Cary Smith, R-Billings, would allow patients the option of directly determining payment options with their doctor for day-to-day care without having to go through insurance. “This bill provides for the opportunity for an individual to go and talk to a doctor and say, ‘for a specific amount you will cover my basic health care needs,” Smith said. Smith intro...

  • Danger is no longer my thing

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jan 25, 2017

I don’t do dangerous anymore. Not that I was ever much of a daredevil, but I certainly engaged in a number of activities over the years that could have caused serious bodily harm. Luck, for the most part, was on my side. It’s been years now since I even broke a bone. I’m more cautious now, content to rest on my laurels, and watch others take chances. Like my wife. Barb was always very active, but since we moved away from the mountains, her outdoor recreation has pretty much been limited to bo...

  • Fairness in the livestock industry

Anna Johnson, Center for Rural Affairs|Jan 25, 2017

USDA took an important step last month to bring more fairness to the livestock industry. The impact of three introduced “Farmer Fair Practice Rules” will be significant across the nation, creating much-needed protections for farmers. Much of the livestock industry is vertically integrated; meat processors enter into contract agreements with farmers to grow livestock. The processor owns the feed and animals, and sells them to the farmer at a set price. This arrangement is especially prevalent in the poultry industry, where 51 percent of the bro...

  • Stop wasting tax dollars on sage grouse

    Ron Stoneberg|Jan 25, 2017

As the 65th MT Legislative Session opened for business last week the usual calls for budget cuts were exceedingly shrill. What made matters worse this year was the loss of revenue due to the demise of the coal and oil and gas industries in Montana. We knew this day of reckoning was coming, so now the budget knives are being sharpened and the fun has begun. I have a suggestion. In the last legislative session the Governor proposed (and the legislature dutifully passed) $10 million to assist sage grouse populations. This was in addition to the $4...

  • All teams showing growth

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jan 25, 2017

The high school sports season is in full bloom. I have to say that I am very proud of our local sports teams. This past week the Malta-Whitewater Wrestling team won the Harlem Wildcat Tournament. That’s huge because t...

  • James Alvin Brayton

    Jan 25, 2017

Early on January 4th, 2017, the chariot swung low for Jim and carried him away home. Jim was born in Great Falls on June 4, 1925, to John M. and Ilo Brayton of Malta, Mont. The youngest of three boys, he grew up in Malta, and enlisted in the Navy at age 17, concerned like many others of his age that the war would be over before he could get into it. Jim served as a signalman on the USS Fletcher from mid-1943 until the end of the war in the Pacific, then came home, married Elaine St. John of Malta, and started a family. However, when the Korean...

  • Whitewater News for December 25, 2017

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Jan 25, 2017

Well like most Democrats I am boycotting Trump’s Inauguration by not watching it on TV. It is sad that if it wasn’t for the Russians “hacking” the DIV computers, Hillary Clinton would be the first woman President of the USA. Anyway congratulations to Hillary for your life’s career in helping people, life goes on. Hillary you got the popular vote anyway. There was a great party at the North 40 for Patty Young’s retirement and birthday. There was a good crowd and lots of food and cake. Nice...
