On Saturday, April 10, a fire broke out next to Highway 2, about five miles west of the county line in Blaine County near White Bear Dam. The BIA(Bureau of Indian Affairs) and Fort Belknap Fire Departments were there on the scene and the Malta Fire Department was called out for support just in case the wind got things out of control. According to Malta FD Chief Josh Newman, there wasn't much damage done. It got to the top of a little hill and they had it under control. The ignition of the fire...
The 21st annual Swishfest was held over the weekend of April 10 and 11. Boys and girls basketball teams between grades 4 through 8 came to compete in Malta's gyms and put their hardcourt talents on display. Each of the winning teams received pullovers. Each team was allotted 30 wristbands for their teams' spectators. This helped to control the amount of people in each of the gyms, and make the transitions between games run smoothly. The Swishfest Tournament is put on by the Malta Athletic Club...
The House passed three comprehensive recreational marijuana implementation bills this week. These bills take different approaches to the regulation of recreational marijuana but they all respect the will of voters and ensure proper safeguards are in place. These bills will now go to the Senate, and most likely a conference committee, to decide the safest and most effective way to open the recreational marijuana market in Montana that voters approved. Local control is important and communities will get to decide whether they want sales in their...
This past Friday was the 68th Legislative Day in Helena. We have 90 days per session to accomplish all we set out to do at the legislature, so that means we are quickly approaching the end of the session. But I am proud of what we have accomplished so far. This past week, the Senate passed House Bill 2, which is the bill that decides the state budget. The budget is split into separate sections, A through E. I presided over the debate and passage of Section A. Section A funds the legislative branch and all the essential parts of the state...

The Museum collections reflect a variety of objects and ethnic people. Immigrants from around the world found their way to Phillips County during the Homestead years. A new display at the Museum features objects from immigrants that came to our area involuntarily. The objects I am referring to are wood carvings from the Prisoner of War Camp that was built in Malta during WWII. Many of the prisoners worked in the beet fields and on farms and ranches in the area. During their “off” hours the prisoners had time to make wood carvings and these ite...
Many of the farmers are in the fields whether fertilizing or planting, or both! The fields are dry and we could use some rain, that's for sure! Keep on praying and I know it'll come! Yes, the crocuses are blooming and I haven't seen the yellow bells, but I'll look again on Wednesday, and report back! I'm so thankful that we continue to have our natural cycles to carry on the seasons and the changes in them! Lu Besel and I went over to Rudyard on Saturday for a Montana Dinosaur Trail meeting. We...

To the Malta Schools Community: The Malta School Board of Trustees determined the necessity to run two (2) levies. A General Fund levy for $23,472.29 and a Building Reserve Fund Levy for $100,000 for ten years for a total of $1,000,000. Because of decreasing enrollments, the General Fund Levy of $23,472.29 will be an increase of $5,083 to next year’s General Fund Budget. Building Reserve Fund: $100,000 levied for 10 years for a total of $1,000,000. To improve all the District’s Buildings and Campus’ and keep them safe and usable, the Board...
Raising a young bird dog is always a challenge. Balancing a pup’s enthusiasm with enough discipline to maintain a handle can be difficult, especially when there are too many birds. That’s not typically a problem. But like a scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, I found myself peering out the windows at the cabin last week to see if the coast was clear. It wasn’t. There were sharptail grouse feeding under the boat parked outside. There were grouse on the split rail fence across the road. T...
With everything that has happened, and is still happening, in and around this country over the past decade or so, it makes me wonder, what the heck is going on? Is there one thing that has brought us to this state of chaos, turmoil, and division? I think that it is an accumulation of many different things over a very long period. It reminds me of that game some played as kids, and adults I guess, where one person tells another person something and then that person tells someone else, and so on. By the end of the chain of people, the story is no...
Margaret (Mikey) Lynn Nevrivy, 44, passed away March 24, 2021, at home. Mikey was born in Havre, Montana on December 2, 1976, and because it was grandma Marge’s birthday too it was no surprise that she was named after her. She graduated from Malta High School in 1995 and went on to move to Billings to work where she made many life-long friends. In 2002 Mikey gave birth to Le’Sadie (Sadie) Rose Stephens who was the light of her life. Mikey leaves behind her daughter Sadie Stephens and Sadie’s fat...
