  • Winter takes its toll on livestock and dairy production

Marko Manoukian, Phillips County Extension Office.|Apr 3, 2019

While many producers in our region battled record cold and snow, for the most part livestock survived the record-breaking weather of February 2019. The same can not be said for dairy and livestock production along the coast and in the mid-west. Only now are estimated beginning to take shape of the impact. For dairy production in Washington, wet cold in February killed 1,600 head of dairy cattle and many more had frozen udders. In South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa winter snow turned into historic...

  • 'Raise the Roof' Fundraiser to Be Held April 12th

Sonia Young, Malta Boys and Girls Club|Apr 3, 2019

The Phillips County Coalition for Healthy Choices and Malta Boys & Girls Club are continuing fundraising efforts to complete much-needed repairs on their existing building housed in the former St. Mary’s Catholic School. Weather and wear have taken its toll on the early-1900’s built building, and repairs are needed. Water from the leaky roof has damaged windowsills and floors throughout the building, and Club activities have been canceled several times in the past few years due to flooding from the damaged roof. In addition, new back doors are...

  • Legislature news from Sen. Mike Lang

    Sen. Mike Lang|Apr 3, 2019

This was a busy week in the legislature. Both the House and Senate acted on large pieces of legislation. As we move toward the end of the 66th legislature, the budget is moving along. I sit on the Senate Finance and Claims Committee where were met one day for eight hours to review House Bill 2 – the largest part of the budget. There were great hearings on different sections of the bill. As I have always done, I am working hard with my colleagues to keep the Governor’s tax increase wish list out of the final version. Money, having enough to go a...

(Late addition to last week's Dodson News) Jenny, Leah, and Brennan Brown, daughter and grandchildren of Selma Miller, arrived to visit Selma on Saturday via Amtrack. We made it past April's Fools Day with out any big surprises. The weather is getting better by the day — much warmer and SUNSHINE! Palm Sunday only two weeks away and then Easter. We should be having really nice weather by then. Several women have been complaining that they have water to clear up from their basements — so far I hav...

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Apr 3, 2019

The Western Meadowlarks have returned! I heard one on Saturday! Last year it seems like I whined about them not being here, but this year they are right on time! We also had a red admiral butterfly hatch out and fly around the yard! I'm not saying we won't have more snow, just that it shouldn't stay very long! Sympathy from the Loring Community to Sherrie Ottinger on the death of her mom, Doris Holman. Sherrie lived in the Loring area for a few years and they still have property here. The...

  • Smallmouth in the bucket?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Apr 3, 2019

I was interested to read that the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks wants to kill the smallmouth bass in a public pond in River Rock subdivision in Belgrade. FWP worries that the smallies could be illegally introduced into area rivers and streams. The department plans to replace the bass with rainbow trout. Neither species is native to Montana, but perhaps because rainbows were planted here first – 1889 as opposed to 1914 -- they get preferential treatment. Or maybe it’s bec...
