  • Phillips County Museum opens on April 1, no foolin'

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Mar 30, 2016

The staff at the Phillips County Museum, going into its 35th year, spent the winter getting items organized and some of the displays revamped, one of which featuring a World War I machine gun that was stuck in a far off corner. "It is in our new military display," said PC Museum Curator Lori Taylor. "We found the machine gun in the corner and nobody knew it was here. We had a military display before, but the gun was what started me to change the display for this year." Taylor said the paperwork...

  • Dodson School to get tech upgrades

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Mar 30, 2016

The Dodson School Board recently approved a technology upgrade to improve the school’s antiquated building equipment in order to progress communication, presentations to students, classroom management and overall learning. Dodson School Superintendent Gary Weitz, in his first year at the school, said that parts of technology tools and resources in the classroom are strong – the school has purchased a number of Ipads and Google Chrome books over the last few years – but added that they are nearly worthless if they can’t run correctly. “Our st...

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Mar 30, 2016

At the final Malta City Council meeting, held last week, an update on the gopher problems in city parks, a change in how zoning permits will be handled in the future and a report from the Parks and Recreation Board were all presented to council members. • A nice place to visit, but...

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Mar 30, 2016

My daughter Leslie and I took a hike yesterday on an island at the mouth of Tampa Bay. It was a beautiful day, temperatures in the high 60s and not a cloud in the sky. Leslie had taken a few days off from her job in Atlanta to join my wife and me in Florida. We had already done all the touristy things -- walked the beach, wasted a few dollars in the tacky shops, and eaten our fill of shrimp. It was Leslie’s last day here and being a Montana girl she suggested the hike. I’d walked the same tra...

  • Ain't Got No Couth

    Jimmy Reed, Columnist|Mar 30, 2016

Let’s hope that scientists in one of the nations that refer to America as the Great Satan don’t figure out how to bounce death ray beams off cell phone satellites. If so, many youths in the country will be fried instantly. Cell phones have altered America’s entire social and cultural landscape. Youngsters who can’t afford essentials, like food and clothing, somehow can afford cell phones, and use them constantly. Social amenities, such as greeting when passing someone in a hall or on a sidewalk, no longer exist among young people because...

  • Hey, you, get off of my cloud

    Brandon Nicholson, Columnist|Mar 30, 2016

The world is full of people who want to see you fail. The kind of people who cannot stand to see things going positive for anyone but themselves. We have all dealt with these types of people. We know to take the criticism with a grain of salt, but it’s hard to be productive with this kind of energy surrounding you. Anyone who does let it get to them runs the risk of it affecting their career and income. While you cannot make these people disappear, there are many ways to make dealing with them easier. Ignoring the hate is a good first step. W...

  • Losing weight at State

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Mar 30, 2016

To expand on my experience during the state tournament, I figured I would tell you about my first experience with a heart rate monitor. Being a Bears, White Sox and Bulls fan really set me up for failure because I know no lead is ever safe and they always leave me on the edge of my seat. When I’m deep into a game I know that at any moment my heart rate goes crazy. When the Malta Mustangs faced off against Wolf Point in the Class B State title in Butte a few years ago, it was my first taste of a...

    Mar 30, 2016

1 years ago March 30, 1916 Electric Light Company may suspend operations It is rumored that the electric light plant will close down the first of the month unless different arrangements can be made. The people of Malta will greatly miss the electric lights in their homes and businesses. The reason for the proposed shutdown is the high price of fuel and the lack of support. In the early evening the plant has a good load, but after 10 or 11 o'clock, there is little doing. The City refuses to giv...
