The day was October 10, 2024. It was a day that Kristy Mooney had looked forward to for over 40 years. Though it took four decades, the matter was over. It was on that day, in a District Court room in Rufugio, Texas, that Gordon Parsons made a formal plea changing his original plea of not guilty in the matter of the death of Robert Dale Mooney, to guilty in court and was facing sentencing. Robert was the father of Kristy, she was two years old when her dad was murdered. Parsons and Arnold Huskey had escaped the Wyoming State Penitentiary on...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks encourages folks to be bear aware, even in the "Hi-Line" area of central and eastern Montana. Many folks are heading into the field for fall hunting, and bears are often very active this time of year as they are looking for high-calorie food sources before hibernation. Bear populations are expanding, and although bear encounters are rare in most of central and eastern Montana, there are known black and grizzly bears in all kinds of habitats along the Hi-Line. This...
Last week the City crew was busy assembling and installing a new piece of playground equipment at Riverview Park. Some dilapidated and unsafe equipment was removed for the new installation. The brightly colored and sturdy structure includes steps up to the base that has a bright red roof. There is a play area and a hands on manipulation center. There are peep-n-seek spots with open room to let the young imaginations open up and run wild. The assembly also has a slide that won't pinch, burn or...

After backing out of two traditional debates, Gov. Greg Gianforte agreed to meet me for only one smaller debate this fall. We’ve posted the full debate, which he doesn’t want you to see, online at busseformontana.com. I invite all Montanans to watch. See for yourself how Gov. Gianforte refused to explain why he jacked up our property taxes by as much as 111%, or why he gave tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires like himself. Gov. Gianforte also refused to explain why, under his watch, Montana surpassed California to become the most una...
Out for a morning walk during a recent trip to Australia I struck up a conversation with three 10-year-old boys who were fishing the Patalawonga River near Adelaide. I asked what they were catching. “Brim and bass,” they told me. Recognizing my accent, they asked if I was from the U.S. “Montana,” I replied. “Do you have any automatic weapons?” they asked in unison, eagerly awaiting my reply. “No,” I said, explaining automatic weapons remain off-limits to most Americans. “Do you have Jolly Ra...
I know it’s not a popular take, but I am not a fan of the two-party system. I tend to vote for whoever I want, not whoever you or the majority of folks want. I agree that it is a better system than most, at least we have a couple of options, rather than being forced to bend a knee to a king, queen, or dictator. Voting is an honor and privilege. Even though things might not go your way, voting is crucial for democracy. That being said, there are more than two types of people in the U.S. I am n... Full story

I hope everyone who reads this column got to check out the unusual sight in the evening sky this week! That comet really put on a show! I enjoyed all the photos of it too! And the full moon earlier this week really was outstanding! I had several visitors this week. Tim and Sheila Watts-Heine came over and visited while I presented her a 50-year pin for OES Sacajawea Chapter membership (Photo on Page 12). It was great to connect with her! Then the Wishers stopped in. Sammie was going to run a...
Sympathy to the victims of the recent hurricanes down south. I now have a hurricane named after me “Helene” from good ole Whitewater, Montana. The fall days are beautiful, sunny, and warm, and no wind. The ranchers are preparing for winter. There is plenty of hay for feed. The high school is in full session with the kids going four days a week. When I grew up, we had school five days a week. Saturday, Sommer Green and I went to the Big Flat Electric annual meeting. It covered a lot. “Hope they...

1 yrs ago Oct. 22, 2014 ** Correction to last week’s entry about the Mustang football team: Coach Nick Oxarart’s Mustangs have outscored the Wolf Point Wolves 399-19 since 2006. That Friday playing the Cut Bank Wolves, they came away with a win of 32-15. A river was flowing in the middle of several blocks in Malta, due to a crack in the cast iron main near the intersection of South 1st Ave. East and South 7th Street East. The crack left some residents without water for much of Friday. It also required the City Works team a 13-hour day as the...

The Malta Cross Country team traveled west to Harlem on a chilly autumn morning for the last meet of the season. The Harlem Cross Country meet takes place at the Harlem Golf Course, a relatively flat 3.1 mile course. This is a great meet and a great place to test your skills you've practiced all season, and hopefully give you a little mental boost and help you gain confidence for the state meet the following weekend. In the past, I have dubbed this the "flat as a pancake" course, one in which yo...

The Whitewater Penguins headed to the Harlem Golf Course on Friday, October 18th. It was about fifty degrees with very little wind when both sets of varsity races took off. We couldn't have asked for better weather. There was great competition at this race with some of the top runners in the state for Class B and C present. Harlem's course is a great course to hit PRs at as it is very flat. It's a great confidence booster before heading to the state meet. Tyler Scheffelmear was our first runner...

Adam Henderson passed away on October 20, 2024 at his home, from complications of diabetes. Adam was born January 22, 1987 to Phillip and Tina Henderson in Havre, MT.
