  • 'Princess PayPay' doing better in Seattle

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Mar 22, 2017

From an alert baby sister to a loving family and caring community, Payton KillEagle seems to have many guardian angels watching over her. Sue Hungerford, Payton's daycare provider, noticed a bump underneath the 9-month-old's ribcage and quickly alerted her father, Wesley KillEagle Jr., who called the detection of the lump a "miracle." From Hungerford noticing the lump on January 23 of this year to now, Payton - known affectionately as Princess PayPay - has been zipped back and forth between... Full story

  • City Council hears construction updates, were City Pool is headed and postponing skatepark project

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Mar 22, 2017

Malta Mayor Shyla Jones and Malta Public Works Director Jim Truelove had a meeting with TD&H, the firm charged with the engineering portion of the city’s water project, and though things have been tense between the entities of late, the latest meeting was more “productive.” “We started at 11 (a.m.) and finished at about 5:30 (p.m.),” Mayor Jones said. “It was a very long meeting, but I feel it was also a very productive meeting as well.” At the first Malta City Council meeting in March, Mayor Jones reported TD&H and the City differed on h...

  • Two change of plea hearings and one initial appearance in District Court

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Mar 22, 2017

Monte Broadbrooks attended a change of plea hearing on Monday, March 13, 2017, in district court, admitting guilt to two counts of misdemeanor theft, and three counts of felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs. Broadbrooks entered a not guilty plea to the counts on January 30 of this year after he was charged with allegedly stealing hydrocodone pills on several occasions and robbing money from a safe out of the house of a Saco man, according to court records. Broadbrooks was caught on a game camera illegally entering the house....

  • Legislative roundup

Michael Siebert, Community News Service UM School of Journalism|Mar 22, 2017

As Republicans and Democrats grapple with how to fund statewide infrastructure projects at the Montana Legislature, one bill in the House aims to put that decision in the hands of local voters. House Bill 577, introduced by Rep. Dave Fern, D-Whitefish, would allow cities and towns to adopt an infrastructure tax on luxury goods and services at a maximum rate of 4 percent. However, the tax would have to be approved by local voters. “House Bill 577 empowers our cities, towns and counties to solve their infrastructure problems,” Fern said. The bill...

  • Don't tell 'that' to the judge

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Mar 22, 2017

Steven Boyd told an incredible story. Unfortunately for the Great Falls man, the judge didn’t buy it. Boyd, who pleaded guilty to family member assault and possession of dangerous drugs in 2012, is in trouble again for violating his parole. He admitted failing to stay in contact with his parole officer, but offered a dramatic excuse. According to the Daily Interlake, Boyd told a Flathead District Court judge that he had been attacked by a grizzly bear while picking berries near Choteau last A...

  • Hat's off to the Trueloves

    Mar 22, 2017

Dear Editor, I think many in this community need to give a big “Hats Off” to Vikki and Jim Truelove. Realizing that many of us could not go to Billings for the recent basketball tournaments, they graciously let us come and watch the big events at the movie theater. We were so lucky to be able to watch the games in this way. Thank you Vikki and Jim for making this possible. We do appreciate what you did for the community fans. Rosemary S. Veseth Malta...

  • Innovating Montana's Agricultural Foundation

    Taylor Brown|Mar 22, 2017

Agriculture is the foundation of Montana’s economy, contributing over five billion dollars annually in recent years as the state’s top industry. With our nearly 60 million acres of farmland statewide, we take pride in our contributions to the state and across the globe. However, just as the world was different even twenty years ago, it is going to be different in the next five, ten, and hundred years down the road. We need to continue to address our current and future challenges by finding new and innovative ways to increase the quality and...

  • What if the workers owned it?

    Mar 22, 2017

The owners of a mid-sized manufacturing plant in a nearby small town were ready to retire, but no one in the next generation was interested in taking over. The plant was sold to an out-of-state buyer with no local ties. The business was profitable, but the new owners chose to merge operations and close the local plant. The story is familiar in small towns. Is there an alternative? I think so. Worker-owned co-ops and employee stock ownership plans could offer another path forward for these businesses. Rural people have a long history of forming...

  • Let's talk brisket, not blown calls

    Mar 22, 2017

I thought I had the heart to smoke a brisket for 20 hours. I did not. I also thought I liked cracked pepper. Wrong again. I set my Weber up for the snake method, which allowed me to light one end of the coals to slowly smoke an eight pound brisket I had purchased the other day. That worked. Being that the brisket is the chest muscle, brisket can get tough if you’re not careful with the amount of heat you use to cook it, so I was really careful while cooking it. One thing I was not careful about was the amount of cracked pepper I put on the b...

    Sharon Kindle, PCN Correspondent|Mar 22, 2017

Live Generously: Hands and Hearts, was the theme on Saturday, March 18 at the Malta Senior Center featuring the Corned Beef and Cabbage annual dinner. The group initiated their new kitchen as it passed the test by serving out around 200 meals, far exceeding the previous year. No matter what your nationality, corned beef is hard to pass up. The group cooked up 60 lbs., far more than in 2016. The generosity of those attending was heartwarming and will allow the finalizing of the kitchen expenses. The Malta Senior Center is currently looking into...

  • Loring NEws for March 22, 2017

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Mar 22, 2017

Happy first day of spring this week! The temps have been amazingly warm for this time of year after we had a blizzard last weekend! Most of the snow is gone, ran down the hills into the coulees and then the dams! I spotted one cedar waxwing in our Russian olives, which is unusual since they usually appear in flocks! Also, I saw some big white birds that I'm calling swans. They were swimming in some snowmelt just off the Milk River! Someone said they were white geese, but I'm saying swans! Also a...

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Mar 22, 2017

Get well wishes to Jahmiah Huffman-LaBrie and Bruce Hill, both of Whitewater. Many from here went to basketball games in Billings including Patty Young. Whitewater had a heavy snowfall, about 2-feet of it. Hellies and other used snowplows and Steve Young shoveled my sidewalk. It is good to have helpful neighbors. Welcome back to Fred Allery Sr., his sister Marlene and her daughter, Wanda! They moved back from Chinook back to the ranch south of Whitewater. The Whitewater senior class of 2017 went...
