The Malta City Council held its meeting this past Tuesday, February 23, at 5:00 pm in the City Hall. The council started the meeting by approving the minutes of the last meeting, followed by approving the agenda for the meeting. Both were voted on and unanimously passed. They then went on to review the audit committee for payment of claims and to approve the January 2021 payroll. Both motioned to approve and seconded. The head of the Department of Public Works, Jim Truelove, then went on to give...
March is Developmental Disabilities (DD) Awareness Month. All month long, Malta Opportunities, Inc. (MOI) is promoting knowledge and understanding of people with developmental disabilities and the contributions we make to the Malta and Phillips County community. In 1987, President Reagan, on the shoulders of the hard working of the 1970s and 1980s to move away from institutions and toward community life, declared March Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The rights of people with disabilities were furthered with the 1990 passing of the...
U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D) held a phone press conference last Thursday, February 25, 2021, for Montana news outlets, during which he outlined three points of interest that he is focusing on that will directly affect North Eastern Montana and the Hi-Line as a whole. The first point he made was his continued support for the Keystone Pipeline. Stating that his support for the pipeline has been “steadfast” for as long as it has been on the docket. He said, “I support [the] responsible development of this pipeline as long as it’s structu...
Spring is on the way in case you haven’t noticed! I saw some geese flying over on Highway 2. The temperatures are warmer and the days are noticeably longer! My heart sings! Tina Russell hosted the Loring Woman’s Club on Wednesday. Paula Morrison, Connie Wasson, Carol Lumsden, Whitney Blunt, Cindy Clark, and Dixie Stordahl were in attendance. The celebration dinner was discussed and we are still working on getting a venue for our feast! While we had refreshments the talk turned to guns. Cha...
The weather is trying to warm up a little---we need it to keep moving in the right direction. While in Laurel this week for a funeral there was quite a difference in weather, from being quite nice to a thick snowstorm on Saturday, depositing 2 to 3 inches of new snow and cold winds again. When we came home on Sunday, by the time we reached Billings and the rest of the way home, roads were dry. The sun was shining but of course, there were the winds and quite hard ones. On Saturday there was a...
Sympathy to Texas residents whose homes were destroyed. Most have been without electricity, water or plumbing, Here in Whitewater, my sewer and bathroom froze up! Some other folks had the same problem. Pat Dunbar has a machine to thaw frozen ground for me. Thanks to Pat! Congratulations to Rory Green for winning the spelling bees. Good work Rory! Also, congratulations to our Whitewater “North Country” Mavericks for winning games! Good games to all athletes. Good luck at state tourneys! Many fan...
According to their own article in local papers recently, the American Prairie Reserve (APR) leases pasture out for 13,000 head of cattle. At $25/head for 6 months, the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization would generate 1.95 million dollars per year, all tax free. As more Ag land is purchased by non-profits, the tax burden will continue to increase for the rest of Montanans. I hope our Legislature can do something to level the playing field! Laura Boyce, Winifred...
February used to be my favorite month. The shortest month of the year, February also signaled the end of winter for me. For years, Barb and I would head for warmer climes at the end of the month. While it might remain cold and snowy in Montana for a while yet, I didn’t care. I wouldn’t be back until spring. Then things changed. Instead of looking forward to dragging a boat clear across the country to Florida, I began to dread the trip. We seemed to always hit a blizzard in the Dakotas. Each yea...
I recently read an article that the Illinois legislature is trying to pass a bill prohibiting the sale of the video game Grand Theft Auto (GTA), saying that it was a direct cause of the escalation of carjacking incidents happening in and around the Chicago area. The article stated that the offenders are getting younger and that this game is making it seem ok to do this. It reminded me of the attack on hard rock and heavy metal music that happened when I was growing up. It was assumed that listening to those kinds of music led to devil...
This week marks the mid-way point of the legislative session, 45th day. It corresponds with a deadline requiring bills that do not have money associated with them to be sent to the opposite chamber of the legislature. Many great bills survived the “transmittal” deadline, but others did not. One that did pass the Senate is SB 100, it adds fraud prevention measures to Montana’s welfare programs. This will make it harder for those individuals trying to take advantage of our system that was set up to provide support for the members of our communiti...

For farmers and ranchers, stress is a way of life. We depend on many factors that are out of our control, like weather, commodity prices, availability of labor, trade markets and a lot more. With the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, our stress levels have gone even higher and in many cases are reaching the breaking point. A new survey from the American Farm Bureau found that more than half of rural adults and farmers/farmworkers say they are personally experiencing more mental health challenges than they were a year ago. Two in three...
The Montana House of Representatives passed House Bill 435 by Rep. Bill Mercer (R-Billings) today. House Bill 435 cleared the two-thirds vote threshold necessary to provide public sector immunity from frivolous lawsuits, making it easier for schools and public services to re-open. It is similar to Senate Bill 65 signed into law by Governor Gianforte last month which provided liability protection to the private sector. “House Bill 435 provides the liability protection necessary to get Montana’s schools and public services safely reo...
