    Kari Hould, PCN Correspondent|Feb 27, 2019

"I pledge allegiance to the flag..." could be heard between the kindergarten rooms of Mrs. April Ost and Mrs. Janine Tuss in Malta Elementary School as the students took time to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to Commander Jim Layton of Buster Deo Post 4067 and Col. Donald Klinko. Students with intensity, sincerity and pride held their right hand over their heart and proudly declared their affirmation to America even though some were slightly nervous. Once they had completed the task, they were...

  • Legislative Roundup

Shaylee Ragar and Tim Pierce, UM Legislative News Service University of Montana School of Journalism|Feb 27, 2019

The Montana House of Representatives last week advanced legislation that would require a two-third vote majority for the Legislature to transfer funds out the state’s fire suppression account. The governor would still hold the authority to pull from the fund, as well. Speaker of the House Greg Hertz, R-Polson, is carrying House Bill 276 and said on the House Floor during the bill’s second hearing that it was proposed in response to the historic 2017 fire season that drained government funds. “We were sitting here in 2017 with a winter much like...

  • Snowed in and feeling fine

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Feb 27, 2019

We were snowbound, and the middle of nowhere was an hour away. I was just fine with it. Barb and I met our friend Mike last week at our cabin on Fort Peck Lake for a few days of ice fishing. Actually Mike did the fishing while Barb and I stayed warm and cozy in the cabin. Mike is of good Minnesota stock so the -30 wind chill and driving snow didn’t bother him in the least. Shortly after first light he’d fire up his 1970’s-era snowmobile and head out onto the ice, quickly vanishing into a swirl...

  • What does sustainable ranching mean?

    Ron Stoneberg|Feb 27, 2019

Have you noticed that 'sustainability' is the latest buzz word related to ranching? Ever wonder what they are talking about? I have attended several workshops and read many articles in an attempt to determine what they mean by 'sustainable ranching'. To date I have not heard a specific definition. Generally, the ranchers on the panels will fall back on, "if the ranch has been around for over 100 years it is probably sustainable". However, after listening to the proponents of the program I am still not sure what they are planning to sustain....
