It was fast, it was big, and it was impressive. It was a U.S. Airforce C-130 aircraft from the 120th Airlift Wing of the Montana Air National Guard and it flew the friendly skies of Montana last Wednesday and buzzed Malta and Phillips County around 11:30 to demonstrate the Department of the Air Force's continued readiness during the national COVID-19 response while saluting the American heroes at the forefront in the fight against COVID-19. Since last week's PCN was published, there has been a...

There was a time that it wasn’t spring until I spotted my first grizzly bear. While I’ve stumbled upon few grizzlies in the fall, it was April when I expected to see them. They were following the elk herds and so was I, although for different purposes. I’d seen grizzlies at night foraging through the Cooke City dump. We used to take girls there, drink beer and park. Running into bears on foot in the backcountry in the middle of the day, however, was an entirely different experience. I was only...
Talking to anyone on the internet is like walking on eggshells. In times of crisis, one would think that something like the game of baseball potentially coming back soon, would bring us together. Not the case. I heard about the possibility of baseball coming back last week and I was happy about it. I can’t watch as much baseball or sometimes any baseball because it takes away from family time, but I still enjoy watching White Sox games when I can. The 2020 Major League Baseball season has been p...

We have been really been enjoying some warm spring days although the wind always seems to blow every day. We have always had a lot of wind but not every day! Terri Cole has been delivering lunches from the center on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and has made several trips to Malta for things. Polly Solberg is still helping at Eva Bruckners i...

Spring weather is its usual unpredictable mix. We had nice warm temps close to 70 degrees, then cool, 30, downpours of rain, a little grapple, and plenty of wind! The moon is on its way to new and the whole month will be the last time to see Venus in the evening for some time. It will be visible in the early morning sky during the summer. I’ve been working at the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum a couple of days this week. Cary Woodruff is working at getting the museum cleaned and I got some m...
This week is Florence Nightingale’s' birthday and it's also National Hospital Week. Our hospitals bring us not only healing but also hope. Phillips County doctors and nurses bring us high-quality health care locally. In the early 1920s, our area had a full-scale diphtheria outbreak. A family, parents, and 11 children, who lived near Saco, Mont., were in a crisis mode. All the children were sick and two were very sick. The parents decided to meet the train at Saco and one of them would travel with the children to the Glasgow Hospital in hopes o...

A week ago, I got to watch the City of Malta Public Works Crew use a jackhammer to break-up concrete inside the bathhouse at the Municipal Pool. It seems like the work there is coming along pretty well. Another thing I got to do was watch the workers take old materials out of the pool, including rotten wood, chunks of concrete, and other materials as they continue to work towards getting the pool open for the 2020 season. The plumbers will be putting in new plumbing including new sinks and...
Since the Hi-Line Retirement Center has been closed to family and friends in order to protect the residents during the Covid-19, Pearl Peacher shared a photo of a Whist team from 2007 because she has dearly missed the residents during this time. A letter from the MHS Activities Director First, I want to and most importantly recognize our student-athletes of Malta High School in these difficult times. Our student-athletes were stripped of many opportunities due to COVID-19. I want to acknowledge the seniors who could not finish their senior season of Track/Field or Golf. I want to thank Pierre, Mark, and the Phillips County News for helping us give our student athletics the recognition our student-athletes deserve. I also want to say...
The 2019 Mustang Football Team started preparation for the season in June with a team camp in Spearfish, South Dakota by competing against teams from South Dakota, Wyoming, and Colorado. The season included eight wins, two losses, a second place finish in the North Division, and a first round playoff victory. The season ended with a Quarter-final loss in Red Lodge. Many great memories were made along the way. This team was a very unselfish group that was a ton of fun to coach. They were led by...
