  • Hoping spills don't become old hat in MT

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jan 28, 2015

Oil has once again fouled the Yellowstone River. And this time around it’s not so shocking. Nearly two years ago a broken pipeline near Laurel leaked 50,000 gallons of crude oil into the river. Another pipeline ruptured earlier this week near Glendive spilling another 50,000 gallons into the longest undammed river in the lower 48. Traces of benzene, a cancer-causing agent, have been detected in the drinking water in Glen-dive. Bottled water is being supplied to the town’s nearly 6,000 res...

I’ll never be able to repay all my friends who helped to make the Country Home a reality. Roger Ferrell and Craig Mangis digging and install the septic in the middle of winter. Craig Ottinger loaning us his backhoe to do the digging. Lyle and Carol Stewart staining all the d...

  • Flags should be displayed on MLK Jr. Holiday

    Jan 28, 2015

Dear Editor, I noticed that on last Monday, which was a federal holiday to honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the American flags were not on display throughout down town Malta. I was told by our fire department that they do not display the flags for this special day, but do display them on September 11 which is now known as Patriot’s Day. I do agree that the American flags should be on display each September 11, but I also feel they should be out on the January Monday that we are to honor Dr. King. I appreciate the time our fire d...

  • Today, I start my collection of $10 bills

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jan 28, 2015

Grandpa Bud always told me that ‘a penny saved is a penny earned.’ He worked the mines in Butte for a lot of his life and from what I know, that was a tough way to earn a buck. His pennies, no doubt, were pinched precisely. The list of idioms about pennies is a lengthy one. ‘A penny for your thoughts,’ ‘I don’t have two pennies to rub together,’ the ‘bad penny’, ‘in for a penny, in for a pound’ and my all-time favorite ‘it costs a pretty penny.’ The list goes on and on, but why do I bring up these little copper dandies today? Let me try...

While I was putting our dear son in his car seat, I strapped him in and then I felt it happen. My back went out! I’m only in my late twenties... How did this happen? I used to be at the gym lifting weights four to five days a week. The pain was severe at first, causing me to double over and then eventually dr...
