Phillips County residents kept a total of $239,368 of their local dollars in the 2019 holiday season as a result of participating in the annual Christmas Scrip program hosted by the three Malta banks and the Malta Area Chamber of Commerce. The total from 2019 was slightly down $26,312 from the total Christmas Scrip spent in 2018, but reports from some Malta Merchants said the holiday season was great even with the scrip total slightly down. For the past four decades, this low-interest loan program has been available at all three local banks; Th...

Title: Together We Can Stop Human Trafficking in Montana January 11th was Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Recently we have seen too many missing youths in Montana who may be human trafficking victims. Learning what we can do to stop this crime may help these, and other, victims of human trafficking. I am a registered nurse, domestic violence advocate, and prosecutor who has dedicated my career working for children and people in need. As a prosecutor, I fought against human trafficking on the front lines: I stood up for children victimized by...
It’s only a day’s drive from here, but it’s a world away. At least I fit in. With longish gray hair and a beard, I looked like a hundred other guys on the street, although they were dressed more like I do at home than on vacation. There was more camo and Carhart khaki in downtown Spokane last week than on the opening day of elk season in the Breaks. But while one younger fellow there was even packing a hatchet, and most everyone was carrying sleeping bags, there didn’t appear to be any hunters...

The house being added on to across from the Phillips County Courthouse has had some construction lights installed as works continues in the home’s basement. It looks to me that sometime this spring or summer, that house will be put back on the foundation. I got to see construction of some of the roof being installed by workers at the new National Guard Armory in Malta Monday of last week. Since winter is in full swing, it seems as though construction around town has slowed down, but if you h...

The Malta Mustangs Wrestling team saw their first action of 2020 and things started off rocky for the squad that went 2-14 at the Chester Mixer on Thursday, January 9.
