  • Saco's skyline altered as historic elevator comes down

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 4, 2015

What took a few years to build, and has stood near the train tracks in Saco since the 1940's, took seconds to knock-down, once it was finally tipped. About 70-or-so onlookers came out in Saco on Friday afternoon to see one of the tallest structures in town – shooting nearly 110-feet into the Saco skyline – toppled due to concerns that the old grain elevator was no longer structurally sound, according to Roberta Christopherson, Manager of Saco Dehy who are the current owners of the building. Chr...

  • Residents top priority at HLRC

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 4, 2015

Karl Rude has been the interim Administrator at the Hi-Line Retirement Center in Malta since August and while some things have changed at the center, others have stayed the same, most importantly, the idea that residents come first. “Residents are number one,” Rude said last week. “I go beyond the phrase ‘residents are number one.’ We are doing what is best for our residents and sometimes that comes with some difficult decisions.” Rude’s companies, Health Management Services LLC (HMS), located in Billings, Mont., operate facilities th...

  • Ohl continues health-care career she always dreamed of

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 4, 2015

Sometimes saving those old elementary school notes and clippings can lead to clutter. Other times, those same notes and clippings can lead to assisting in career choices. Theresa Ohl always knew she wanted to be a medical professional, but she wasn’t sure in which medical field she would pursue her career. Her initial thoughts were to become a heart or neurosurgeon, but she wasn’t sure. At a point in her life when she wasn’t sure which steps to take in her professional life, Ohl happened upon...

  • None to pleasant, but I have tasted worse

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Nov 4, 2015

Sometimes hunting leaves a bad taste in my mouth. My friend Edub and I were up north a few days ago in search of pheasants. He was hunting behind his big running German shorthair Streak and I was trailing Ace, my 4-year-old springer spaniel. Edub and I headed in different directions when we left the truck. He and Streak started working the thick cover along the creekbank while Ace and I walked through a long, wide strip of uncut alfalfa. Eventually, Ace put up a couple of roosters and I shot...

  • Taking issue with Hi-Line Retirement Center

    Nov 4, 2015

Dear Editor, Last week I had the unfortunate opportunity to observe a "rent-a-nurse" transporting one of the sweetest elderly Hi Line Residents on the bus to a beauty shop appointment. The "nurse" was rude, abrupt and abrasive to the Senior. Have observed local "nurses" transporting this same woman for the same appointment, it had always been a jovial light hearted loving activity. Understanding "rents" make $27 plus perks an hour and "locals" only make $10 not sure if they have any perks - where is the logic in not paying "locals" more - who...

  • Inspired by an artist and how music continues to evolve

    Brandon Nicholson, Columnist|Nov 4, 2015

Hello friends, I’d like to start by apologizing for the lack of a column last week, I got hit by the flu bug pretty hard. ‘Tis the season! The last two weeks have been interesting, to say the least. I met a young artist from North Carolina named Jaac, and he is incredibly talented. He’s a senior in high school, with a promising future ahead of him. While talking I asked him what inspired him to pursue a career in music. “Seeing J.Cole’s movement inspired me, and knowing he’s from North Carolina proves I can do it too,” he said. This statemen...

  • Happy 15th, my dear

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 4, 2015

Happy 15th, my dear It was a wild week at the ol' community newspaper. From customer appreciation, to a few parades. From playoff high school football to old elevators being toppled in Saco. There was no shortage of news, that is for sure. Some weeks are busier than others at the PCN, but last week seems like it was the busiest (at least in my 89-weeks as captain of the ship.) While all the goings-on kept me busy all weekend long, one event -- the most important to me -- was somewhat short-changed and not as eventful as I would have liked. My...

    Lori Taylor, PC Museum Curator|Nov 4, 2015

Does anyone remember the old Power Plant that was located a few miles below Cow Island on the bank of the Missouri River? It was originally built because the Little Rockies Ruby Mine needed more power than could be supplied by the electrical plant south of Landusky. To solve the problem the stock holders of the mine came up with a plan to located an electric plant on the banks of the Missouri River. The two boilers needed for the plant were delivered to Winifred via railroad and then, well known freighter Joe Hartman, delivered the boilers to...

Get well wishes to all who are sick, especially flu victims. Pastor and Mrs. Larry Doyle, from Havre, were guest speakers at Whitewater Baptist Church. Pastor Wisher went to Nebraska. The Andersons, Austins, Hellies and other are shipping. Justin Austin of Denver is home to work the ranch. The Whitewater Lutheran Church has guests for...

Only two months left of 2015! Unbelievable! Pete and Carol Lumsden, Whitney and Jay Blunt and sons attended a family reunion at Absarokee for Bob and Kathleen Lumsdens 50 anniversary over the weekend. Most of the Pete's siblings were in attendance. The town of Loring was pretty quiet for Halloween this year. Not even one outhouse tipped over! No toilet paper in the trees, not even one single trick or treater! Our young goblins are busy elsewhere! And the other tricks haven't happened for nearly...

Haven’t seen or talked with anyone since I returned, so don’t have much news. We returned from a wonderful trip to Alaska, where we visited my daughter Karen and her husband Bud Cribley at Anchorage. We saw lots of country, big mountains, lots of water, different animals and learned about our wonderful state of Alaska from Bud, who is with the BLM there. Saw a lot of moose but only a few bears, but they visited our daughters yard several nights while we were there. The temperature and the veg...
