Missed holidays and missed birthdays of family and friends. Those are just two of the reasons former Phillips County Undersheriff Kevin Metcalf has entered retirement. Besides that, 24 years of being a target behind a gold star that won't stop a bullet, merits a day or two of time off to do the things in life that the job has kept him from doing. Kevin signed off on his radio at 4:56 p.m. on Dec. 21, 2022, with a bit of emotion in his voice. When you truly enjoy what you're doing, it is more tha...

U.S. SENATE – Senators Steve Daines (Mont.) and Jim Risch (Idaho) today issued the following statements in response to the Biden administration releasing a past-due report demanded by the two senators and required by law that had the administration give a detailed account of the effects of its decision to cancel construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. President Biden revoked the cross-border operation permit for the project the first day he took office. The report released by the U.S. Department of Energy states the Keystone XL pipeline w...
I saw a bald eagle having some venison lunch this week (roadkill). It surprises me how the carrion can be found in very little time. My golden retriever had a date with the groomer this week. He looks so nice with his new do. I’ve had him for almost 3 1⁄2 years now. He loves snow! He just burrows his head into the banks and rolls or just lays in the snowbank. These furry friends sure do keep a person entertained! The weather has been nice for January! Not much wind, no new snow, and tem...
When Barb and I moved to Malta from Bozeman 17 years ago I jokingly told people I was moving back to Montana. Bozeman, like many places in the state had begun to look like everywhere else in the country: same stores, same housing developments, same traffic jams. It also was a place of economic vitality. There were jobs and opportunities to make a living there. Barb and I, however, didn’t need that. We could work online, and brought our jobs with us to Malta, where, unlike Bozeman, the economy w...
Fifteen hours left to drive to their home in Minnesota, a family of six stopped along the Hwy 2 at the DQ for a quick bite. They had been over to Whitefish where they have a cabin, spending the last three weeks skiing and enjoying family time. Ah, now wasn’t that just a warm and melt your heart little sharing. If you would like, here is where we met up with them. The family had ordered and were using the restroom, stretching their legs, and merely waiting to head down the road. *Since I never introduced myself, nor did they to me, I’ll jus...

They had used a GPS and drove right up to his home at 226 Pearl Drive, just in time to celebrate Noble’s 91st birthday. Under watchful eyes Donald Bradley Lynn was sanctioned by the Montana Board of Outfitters, after being found guilty of illegally guiding hunters on the Ft. Belknap Reservation. He was f...
It has been a couple of busy weeks for our little community. Basketball games, bingo nights, music concerts, the list keeps going. I want to give proper recognition to the kids that are breaking books out of "book jail" and volunteering their time outside of the classroom. These last two weeks Saco's Pep Club hosted bingo on two separate occasions, but the 13th was especially fun. The attendees were able to win homemade goodies made from kids of the student body if they won the bingo game. We...

The Malta M-ette basketball team picked up a trio of victories to start off the new year, including a game in which Malta used their reserves longer than their starters. "It feels pretty good to be able to come back from losing to Havre and being back here with three straight wins," Freshman guard Neva Jacobson told the PCN. Jacobson, who typically is the team's sixth man, was asked what has been the key to their start in 2023. "Probably our defense, our patience with the ball, and taking care...
